Do The Ej25 Always Have Noisy Tappets??

Post by chriSTIan » Thu Sep 21, 2006 10:18 pm

Hi All
Looking at buying a gen3 outback,i looked at a couple with around 100000kms on them and when they are running you can really hear the tappets
Is that the norm on these?
They are noisier than ej22's
Thanx for your input
Christian

That EJ25 had just past 250,000 on it when I test drove it in the Outback. It was removed the next week after that and not started again until it was in your Enduro (which was about 18 months later). Even then it had no tappet noise at all.
Was a very very well taken care of motor tho, I saw the log book and every service was stamped. Also it was mostly used to highway driving as the owner lived in Perth but worked in a regional area.

Christian I'd say keep looking around because they shouldn't have noisy tappets at all if they've been taken care of.

is it the gen 1 outback with the quad cam engine?? cuse if so i know the noise that u are hearing mate its not tappets....its piston slap the early quad cams had a lot of problems like that they even had a recall i think i can remember...but the prob stayed even with new pistons it was the pistons that were the main culprits followed closely by something to do with the design of the block...rectified with the single cam 2.5lts...cheers BEN

I've looked at 3 all sohc, you hear the tappets on them, its not like the ea82 type noise but more of a constant low rumble, coming from both sides.
I believe 1 of those has had the fsh at the dealers.
I would have thought that they would have picked it up.

Chris nah I never got the log book. The guy would have wanted to keep it with the car no doubt. It was a 1999 Outback getting an upgrade to a EJ20twin turbo motor.
