spedo intermitant 97 forester

Hi All,
I am tring to help my workmate save a few $'s and correct the fault namley a intermittant spedo on a 97 forester.

We guessed the sensor..
is it the unit on the driver side of the gear box? (its RH drive of corse) ?
has any one had similar issues ?
Subaru quoted $300 to fix the problem!

Have been away from this forum due to inheriting a daihatsu terios. I miss our L series, had to sell it to a relo. It did a timing belt & idler bearing at 360,000 apart from that it still go's well.

Miss my brumby:( best vehicle I ever owned did 500,000!

Had the same thing happen on a '98 Foz. I have a working sensor to suit for $70 incl post.
