Steering rack boots

I've got a split boot on my L rack.

I've noticed on the later EJ racks, there is only a clip at each end of the boot, not the 3rd one over the ball part like on the L.

Is this 3rd clip necessary? If not, I can get some heat resistant boots meant for the WRX, etc, due to the proximity of the exhaust on the driver's side.
