Rear diff any where from 50 bucks for a standard diff up to 450 for a limited slip one.

The front one is part of your gearbox. You could try and buy one seperately but it is better to just throw in another box. Expect around $300 upwards.

Maybe you'd like a second opinion on the problem?

I've never heard of a front diff going in an L-series before (doesn't mean it doesn't happen though!).

What are the symptoms?

I have heard and replaced an L series gearbox, the owner was young and didnt have much interest in car and a leaking seal ran it out of juice the box was very sad inside.

But thats the only one in about 15years of playing with Subys so its not what i would call a common problem

I'll call your $20 and raise you $10 - bet he stripped out the hub splines.
