L-Series 5spd dr Questions

Post by schultzie » Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:53 pm

can i safely drive my L with the rear part of the tail shaft out?

i ask because as the car is now finally on the road it has got a severe vibration above 60kmh which is coming from the tail shaft.

i know it is coming from there because we took a section on the tail shaft out and the vibration is gone, checked the uni's but there is bugger all movement and dad and i cant work out why the vibration is so bad, i had a guess that the rubber donut might have had something to do with it but i have no idea.

thought about going to the wreckers and getting another tailshaft just an idea though... i just thought i would ask here first.

Oil will pour out of the tailshaft hole if they are the same as MYs. Been there done that :)

If you have access to anither tailshaft try swapping it and see if it is still there. Removing the rar part of the tailshaft and driving is ok as long as you have somthingin the back of the box oil wont come out.

What you are descibing sounds like a uni issue.

did you make sure the tailshaft went back to the same position? it may just need to be rotated to get it back into balance.

With MY boxes, oil pours out as soon as u take the tail shaft out... L series boxes wont pour out when the car is still.... but i think it is a fair guess that when u take off and the oil moves to the back of the box it would come out.

Covering it with something might be ok for a quick test to see if thats the problem but i certainly would not leave it like that for more than a few hundred meters.

I think Schultzie might be referring to the rear part of the L-Series tailshaft from the centre support bearing back to the rear diff. If it is only this section that is removed then there will be no oil leakage problems as the transmission is still sealed by the front half of the tailshaft that runs from the transmission to the centre support bearing. As for running with the rear section of the prop shaft removed I think it should be OK, I'm fairly sure a friend of mine has done this and driven a few hundred k's like it after a uni joint seized on him while he was a fair way from anything in northern WA.

that is exactly what i was talking about gremlins, the 2nd peice of the tailshaft.

i wouldnt be silly enough to pull the front half out.

i'm fairly sure it is the uni's but what i think i will do is go to the wreckers and get a tailshaft off another one and see how that goes. if that fails then it will be off to get new unis :D all fun though.

How goes you L-series now of days gremlins? comeing over our way any time soon im sure that not only myself but my folks would look forward to catching up with you gurs again...

Thanks Justin

My L-Series has gone to a new home as I bought a new Subaru to play with, although this one is road going only. No plans at the moment to head over your way but you never know. Hope you get the tailshaft sorted out, as it's a bit difficult going 4WD'ing with that bit missing!!
