Help, Brumby stutters...

Post by tomkah » Tue Aug 08, 2006 7:35 am

Hi all,

lately my 89 Brumby stutters when going up a hill...and I am not talking Mt. Everest.

It is worst in the morning but even when it's warm and I have to accellerate in 2nd f.e. to make it up the hill after about 50m it starts to stutter and jerk. All is fine on a straight road.

If the hill is long enough, I guess it would even stall but that hasn't happened yet. I pulled over once and the engine shut down but I could immediately start it again and it would idle ok.

All is stock on the Brumby. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Thomas

hmmm, good question, from memory it is fine...but I'll give that a try. I guess I have adjusted my driving style to "slow and slow" not to upset the Brumby...

I was thinking in the lines of dirt in the tank or something...but then again...that wouldn't make much sense either...

Hi guys,

thanks for all your help. The fuel filters it were!

...however...

I should have read your replies more closely...fuelfilterS...I replaced the one in the engine bay. The stuttering was much better...but got worse again after about 2 weeks.

So I took it in to my (now ex-) mechanic. He replaced the ignition coil for $150 and said it was fixed...but if it still stutters it would be carbon built up in the cylinders...pretty bad for fuel injected cars, he said...I repeatedly told him that mine isn't fuel injected...pretty bad for fuel injected cars, he said...oh well.

On the ride home I found that problem still existed...

Took it to Beaurepairs, (we use them a lot where I work). They replaced the dissy but only charged me for parts ($35). Didn't fix it but they tried.

I tried the Subaru Shop on Southpine Rd in Brisbane. I called them about a year ago with a different problem but couldn't get in because they had closed the books for new customers (they helped over the phone anyway!). I described the problems and he asked me, WHICH fuelfilter I replaced...the rest is history.

Anyway, thanks everybody, and Subaru Shop, you have a new customer, my wife's Forester will need regular servicing starting in about 2 months...if you take new customers, that is.

Cheers,

Thomas
