EJ20T conversion problems

Post by PeeJay » Mon Oct 31, 2005 7:12 pm

Yes, yet another "please help my conversion" thread :)

This is a 1993 EJ20T into an RX.

I've got all the wires for the computer hooked up, ignition relay and fuel pump + relay all work.

But the engine dosen't start. There is no spark.

I've checked that there is power going to the coils but I don't know what else to check. In the manual on page 181 there is a diagram of the ignition system, but it uses a single coil, where the EJ20T uses 4 coil packs.

Help!!

Does a bit of fuel down the guts encite some life?

does the starter turn?

did you conect the "self shut-down" circuit correctly?

does the fuel pump deliver fuel? - try disconecting the return line and see if fuel comes out when you switch on power to the fuel pump...

I took one of the coil packs off so I can see that there is no spark. Starter turns very nicely. Fuel pump pumps correctly, I can feel firm pressure in both fuel lines. If I can find a tube long enough (bit worried about sparks) I'll disconnect the return and have a look.

What is this self shutdown circuit you mention?

I can't remember having seen shut down circuits, but it is probably crash protection related, ie you crash it kills the engine and fuel pump to prevent flames whilst you are stuck in a mangled subie.

If you have no spark then there is a problem in two possible places...

1. The ignition circuit - go to your FSM and follow the diagnostic procedure for the ignition circuit, test it exactly as the procedure says.

2. The crank/cam angle sensor - if these aren't working right, the ECU has no idea where the engine is at in its cycle and can't fire the coils. It won't open the injectors either. Do the diagnostics for those circuits too.

Before testing 2 though, take the exhaust off and crank it, if there is a fuel smell then fuel is being injected and the cam/crank sensors are doing their thing.

Also, ensure that you use the EJ ECU harness starter connections wired into the L harness, rather than the L starter connections.

Self shut off control is just the ecu's control over the ignition relay, the fuel pump relay would not work if the main relay wasn't energised. Coils are energised by ignition switch 12v(except on s1 Legacy) and triggered by the ignition module at the drivers strut tower. People oftem forget to plug both Ign module plugs in so have a look at that too.
