Cv drive shafts.
Cv drive shafts.
I have bought two sets of CV Brumby drive shafts in the last 12 months and they all all failed within 10000ks. I have dismantled them and notice that the inner race and bearings are held in both the CV joint and the outer race by one large snap ring-- There is NO small snap ring in front or behind the inner or outer races that hold the six bearings in place as is in the case with the genuine cv drive shafts. Any ideas out there. Like where can i buy parts to manufacture my own CV drive shafts. using the old axle shafts.

Here is a couple that might be able to help :

I'd ask for a sample first so you can check out to see if they are made of the 'right stuff' ...
Forget the Repco ones, as they are inferior ...

There is only retainer ring in the inner CV joint and a circlip to hold the the bearing cage runner (the star shaped part) on the shaft.
Before you rush out and buy another set of shafts pull one down and see what the condition of the bearing cage runner (the star shaped part) is
have a look at this picture

In the case of the star above I wouldn't use it again due to the damage on the outer faces. I've used the only photo I could find on the internet
if it was confined to the inner curves the star could be used again.
However notice that one side of the inner curves of the star is flogged but the other side is near new. the star can be rotated on the shaft and used again, with the same cup and bearings provided the cup looks no worse than this.

If you find the inner joint is beyond repair then you will need to look at either re-manufactured joints or new joints.
Over here there is a shop up in Perth called Allan's C.V. Joint
http://www.allanscvjoint.com.au/
I got re-manufactured inner cups and new outer CV's from them in 2011 for my brumby. They have not skipped a beat since I built the shafts and put them in. I have replaced the boots and re-greased the joints on both the shafts once in 4 years.
Both inner cups showed normal wear and I rotated the bearing cage runner (the star shaped part) so that the face with out wear was being used. (as stated above)
Good quality grease is very important, the brand is your choice. I have been told don't use high temperature grease as it won't work. I'm currently using caltex lipex ep2 a high temperature lithium grease that the fitters at work swear by.
Finally good quality boots are a must, subaru originals are good but expensive.
kelpro boots work well and are way better than the CV boots on ebay.
good luck
