Brumby Drive Shafts.
Brumby Drive Shafts.
I bought 2 front drive shafts on Ebay for total $250.00 thats $125 each. I see some for $95 and some up to $185. How can u tell the the expensive ones are better than the cheapies.....Its got me. Seems like a great rip off by the people that sell then for $185 if they are only the same as the cheapies for $95. A mechanic mate of mine told me its just one big punt on whether u get the ones with bearings or the ones with that 3 ball knuckle. There should be some regulation for the sellers to describe the make up the CV joints--Like are they the 6 bearing type or are they the 3 ball knuckle joint. As things stand we are all buying these cv drive shafts blind.

When it comes to brumbys. "L" series and other older subarus, I have found the best way to avoid this problem is to build my own shafts. The inner DOJ and the outer CV joint can be bought as seperate parts. That way you know you are getting the the 6 bearing type not the the 3 ball knuckle joint. The hardest part is the mess
This video / photo montage (below) by Miles Fox gives you an idea of what needs to be done.
The hardest part is getting the outer CV off the shaft, but then If it isn't clicking when the steering is under full lock and at load it doesn't need replacing.

Ive stripped a few down and swapped parts round to get a good shaft, and have no hestatition in dropping a cv shaft to replace the boot. No way I'd throw a good CV shaft away just because the boots busted. Its a messy job but I followed up on this CV shaft repair after going on YOUTUBE. The only problem is find a place that sells the parts. Bearings /cage etc.
I've bought 2 TWO sets of Brumby CV Drive Shafts of Ebay and as soon as I've installed them they continually CLUNK on 360 degree turns. All Imported Chow remanf shafts I guess. No such thing as genuine anymore but if I can get genuinely remanf drive shafts in stead of these shonky Ebay ones I'd be real happy. I'm told Driveline Services sell good shafts. Any of u guys out there have any good companies that sell good shafts.
I went to the trouble of pulling down a set of these elcheapo ebay brumby cv' and found that they did in fact have 6 bearings , but they were much larger that the genuine. The outer race was larger in diameter and they only had the LARGE snap ring up front of the race - no small snap ring behind it same with the front cv joint larger bearings only the one big snap ring with no small snap ring behind. They seemed to operated ok on the bench, buggered if I know looks like a decision for an engineer.
