EA81 got that EA82 sweet spot lll on flywheel

Post by steptoe » Wed Jun 18, 2014 4:40 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows if and where that sweet spot is for EA81 heads going back on with rocker gear to catch that sweet spot where no cam lobe is on valve springs?

Currently placed so pots are both half way up down at same level in bores on side head is to go on. Daylight is fading....

that'll be the number 1 piston at top dead centre, rotor button pointing directly at the securing bolt for dist. That is if you are doing 1 and 3 head. That is where I am at.
And have a rather odd problem. Heads are back from shop, head gasket is on and head is being dryfitted up to make sure everything is good - AND IT IS NOT :(
We have a 4mm clearance of an exhaust valve for number three. All adjusters are about same postion of thread used, push rods are in their cups, all pushrods are same length, all pushrods move with engine turned over, rocker pedestals are square on the head, just head gasket is not done up due to those long bolts for rocker shafts being part of head tension sequence. Nothing looks out of place bar the big gap.All was quiet before dismantle - this would be a racket or would have fallen off the pushrod if before

Thanks. That only worked for RHS, complete 180 spin on rotor did not get same result on LHS.

Up and running yet? I don't think you can expect previous tappet adjustment to be spot on. I've set my tappets COLD 6 thou for inlet, 8 thou for exhaust and if they are too tight I will find out in due course. Factory spec, ten and 12 thou is for chaff cutter sound effects ! :(

Plick of a job on car, though appreciate the chassis rail holes - now know what they are for :) behind the bung plugs.

I had troubles on LHS rocker shaft instal, #2 exhaust valve riding so pulled it off, started again with the adjusters completely backed off, all seemed good, just as my work light lost its power, back went ....

I just back the rockers off and slowy and evenly nip em up before going through the the 3 step tourque sequence (except the 6mm studs, tighten them after the the others).Make sure you re check the centre nut after doing them all up (I always do a couple of extra laps with the torque wrench anyway). Gen 1 1600s had spacers that went in place of the rocker shaft supporter for a initial torquing before before undoing them and putting on the rocker assembly to insure proper seating but that is because they didn't have dowels to locate the head.

I was thinking I can't remember the push rods being an issue when putting the ea81 back together for Redback. Then I remembered that dad did the work on that one to Hel me out (and give him something to do while I was at work).

And I'd rather have the torch go on me Jonno... Not good about the back. Look after yourself!

All the best

thanks, back comes good the moment walk away from the open bonnet.

Centre nut #1 in sequence, makes me wonder if rare tool I borrow for the job, and crows foot not a good fit ( that is what some Subaroo specialist showed & claimed they use :( ) makes me wonder how many EA81s get around with #1 nut torqued up 3 steps before the rocker shaft goes on !?
