Lightening an MY wagon
Lightening an MY wagon
How would I lighten my car? I read my tags in the engine bay and it says my GVM is 1570Kg. Now I either read it wrong, or my car is rather heavy. I know there are immeasurable benifits to lightening my car, but i havent a clue how to do it. is it even possible for my MY?

Sorry mate, you read it wrong, GVM means the most the car is legally allowed to weigh including load, people, the car itself, accumulated bird poo, whatever.
The general tare or kerb weight of a MY wagon is 1010kg.
Theres not much you could actually do to lighten an MY, IMO if you ditched the 4WD box for 2WD, rear diff and cv's, every seat but the drivers, the spare tyre, the vinyl and other "excess" interior stuff you'd be doing VERY well to reduce the weight by even 200kg.
The MY's are pretty bare, not as bare as a VW beetle but not feature packed by any stretch.
Why do you want to lighten it and what do you hope to gain?
Jordan.

BVCP is right there on all counts.
To lighten your now FWD single seater car further you could do it like they do in the States and replace those heavy doors with a piece of exhaust tubing. Remove all glass and replace with Glad Wrap. Then go all 70s style and drill holes in everything. Car should weigh about 600kg's at this point
.
1010kg's isn't heavy at all. There's a reason MY's with even something as humble as an EJ20G can smoke stock HSV's all day long...

An often overlooked one is to always keep less than a quarter of a tank of fuel in it. You know how heavy a 20 litre jerry can is to lift........do you really need to carry the equivilant of two of those around with you all the time?
Of course the other thing is to start running around the block everynight and chow down on some salads but it depends how hardcore you really want to go

Not 100% sure, but I'll have a guess at saying if fitted to your MY it will weigh around 100kg's more? You won't feel it, as an EJ20K will have around 105kw more than an EA81, and with a few simple performance bolt ons it will make a good 40-50kw more again (on higher boost).
