Subaru legacy bg5 automatic gearbox issues

Post by nairobery » Thu Mar 06, 2014 7:55 pm

Hi y'all, we got a bg5 legacy for my wife , we noticed it didn't have power whenever you tried to accelerate hard and uphill its like a tortoise.

we also realised that the automatic transmission had been changed and the had a slight difference, we just never checked carefully.... See attached image

Anyway we did a diagnosis and this is were the results ... see attached image

Now is the transmission all wrong or it might be the torque converter ratios that are all wrong.

Someone please help, coz my wife just wants to fry me right now.

five of those codes are for the engine, four are for the transmission.

Does the transmission shift smoothly and does it have enough fluid in it?

when you go up a hill does the transmission change down a gear or stay it the same gear?

Make sure you check the right level as these boxes have 2 dipsticks one for the differential and one for the transmission.

there is a factory service manual for your model here

I have the same issues in my wife's BG5 twin turbo wagon. Someone has fitted a non turbo auto trans and the engine revs flare when they change and the car isn't as pocky as the normal twin turbo wagon. I also had similar issues on a car many years ago when someone sold me an auto trans with a different number, they assured me that it would work but 6 hours labour time later, I found the box didn't work as it should. From now on I always get matching numbers.

I would first of all, drain the trans fluid and remove the sump pan. Then check for any slug or fillings. If all clean, just clean the filter and refit the sump. Fill with good quality Dextron III trans fluid and test drive. I find old or incorrect fluid plays havoc on Subaru gearboxes.
