Mud Bath

So i drove into a nice looking mud hole the other day hopeful that as usual my trusty Subie would pull me out. However this time it did not work out :shock:
Car managed to get a bow line up to its bonnet, lose power then get stuck in the middle. The old girl was choked by water as i attempted to reverse out and lots of thick clay based mud completely blocked my rear muffler rendering it useless.
Got the car running again to find more issues once exhaust was unblocked :(
Long story short turns out water and mud got into my carby also. I removed the hitachi carb and pulled it down on a bench. What i saw was quite a shocking amound of soft clay based mud in the float bowl and a ruined accelerator pump (also filled with mud).
The car ran a new (until that day) air filter so i am confused as to how so much sludgy mud got in there. Has any one had this kinda problem happen to them?

Yes Ive had this happen to me on the beach with sand. It happened to me because the rubber seal that runs around the lid of the air box had got hard and would no longer compress. This meant that when I screwed down the air box lid it tightened down on that gasket, not the top sealing face of the air filter. So basically the air filter was loose inside the air box and sand could get around it. Might be worth having a look at. Remedy for me was simply to remove the air box lid's hard gasket completely. Now the air box lid clamps down onto the air filter, the only dis-advantage being that air can now be drawn into the air box from around the lid.

Lucky you didnt suck water into the engine & hydrolock it.

I would make certain that the filter element is fully sealed by the filter box as any leaks around the filter will allow dust/sand into the engine, contaminating the oil & severely damaging the rings, cylinders & pretty much everything else. A great way to destroy an engine in a pretty short time :(
