Lighting Problems - Brumby

Post by blahblah » Fri Jul 07, 2006 6:12 pm

My old sealed beam headlamps where on the way out

So I replaced them with some Hella H4 kits.
The only problem is that now the Headlights look as if they are on Highbeam

I have the twin light configuration
I haven't touched any wires
and the High Beams come on when the lights are on but not on high beam

WTF have I done
I thought it would be a simple swap

Sure you just haven't got the beams pointing slightly upwards? When you put high beam on, does the light dim at all?

If they are around the wrong way it wouldn't be too hard to right it.

Yes they do

But both lights are on all the time
I'm sure this isn't supposed to happen

Hey,
Are you using some sort of relay loom to run them?
If so this could be set up for switched power not switched ground...

I think that the plugs to lamp combination changes from a sealed lamp to H4.
With the kit, was any new plugs supplied for each lamp?

You may have to meter out the lamp to the wiring loom, and relays are highly recommended. Sorry, I cant remember the pin out for H4.

Maybe you can use a pre-made Toyota 80 series LandCruiser wiring loom? IPF and Pirahna both market this loom, and then you could easily run higher wattage bulbs.

Did the same on mine as yours blahblah. I haven't worked it out yet, just unplugged the centre high beams only, and I can now dip my lights, but only have half as much light as I should.

Do what Jack said, Too much load for the factory switching.
I did this exact same process, each function should be fed through a relay if you run H4s.

Or you are going to let the smoke out!

Auto Electrican has done this for me

He ran relays to everything, even put a seperate switch for spotties under the dash for me, and ran all new cable.
