That is the EGR pipe, on my brumby it hooked up to a valve that sat on the passenger firewall that went to the exhaust as well in the EA82 I have no Idea where the valve would be.

Or that could just be the early pipe that runs from the exhaust to the engine. My Dual carby engine had one, it ran with out it but ran way better with it.

this extract might mean it was plugged from new??

... Now, I plugged the vacuum hose to the EGR valve with a golf tee. Engine runs significantly better. ...

Well... The EA82 engine has a faulty EGR design and Subaru knew that, so they eliminated the EGR pass on the Third Gen of EA82 Heads.

(There are Three Gens of EA82 Heads, more info & Pics, ~► Here)

So, since my Subaru "BumbleBeast" Runs on the Third gen Heads, I just Removed the EGR stuff from the Intake, as you can see pics, ~► Here.

And I haven't had any Issues related to the EGR.

So I Kindly suggest to let it Unplugged, just close (cap) the vacuum hose that goes to the EGR valve, to prevent a vacuum leak and Try your subie like that for a while; if you don't like the Behaviour, you can either reconnect it or buy a brand new EGR for 70 Bucks... but it worth the Test

was from USMB.

It is quite possible that it was blanked from the factory, but it looks a bit rough. Is it sealed properly?

I wouldn't try to remove it as it looks rather ensconced, if anything I would either silicon over it or hide it with liquid metal.

yeh, good advice mate. this info was obtained from TonRhere on USMB which was informative

A properly functioning EGR system won't effect engine operation.

EGR system that's been blocked off, won't effect engine operation, provided it's all sealed correctly.

"A faulty EGR valve that doesn't seal/close, will cause idle issues.

The port on the pictured manifold is where the tube from the head attaches. Carded/SPFI EA82 engines use the same tube from head to manifold, and that tube will fit the EA81 engine with an EA82 intake mounted.

Test fit the EA82 manifold to your engine first, you may find that it hits the mating area of the engine case halves. It will want to rock side to side, and it won't seal at the gaskets correctly.
Depends on the actual casting really, but it does happen with some engines. A little grinding of the seam is the fix, and it doesn't effect engine any. "

The manifold does indeed rock a little. so have to grind a little meat away on the block. all questions answered now. thanks

Thanks for finding that info re EGR valves Tony, helps me now I know I can just blank off the EGR on my twin manifold. The port on the cylinder head has already been welded up.
Will it ever end!?

I think you've gone the right way mate, this is one very clean looking setup that will make Tweety look tidy with EFI:

Looking good fella's. Any chance you could pop off the air ducting and take a shot inside the throttle body with the butterfly held open? Id be interested in seeing whats going on there.

I'm guessing you're talking about the SPFI unit - the MPFI unit doesn't have much more than a butterfly before the pendulum (I think that's what it's called).

All I could quickly dig up on G-images is this:

Thanks Scott. Yeh Doug..when its all going will get a good pic down the spfi throat lol.

Its on the engine now though. about half the hook ups done. throttle dizzy and coil, fuel lines, pump to hook up. going well.

timed the engine to the required 20 degrees before taking off the SC. lined up the rotor button to number one cyl. did a steptoe and put coloured zippers on the leads so dont mix them up.

Took off about 3mm off the block halves for the clearance. ok there.

I will be selling the supercharger complete. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of wanting it from this site. Will come with the following items.
- recalibrated dizzy, SC12, mounts, blow off valve, manifolds, dellorto carbie plus one for parts, catch can, full water injection system incl filter, reservoir bottle, nozzle on/off switch (works on boost) etc. Full bolt on system think accelerator linkage choke linkage etc will be the only things one would need to hook up. Pictures of the disassembly to guide the buyer.

Anyway here are a few pics of this arvos effort.

Looking good Tweety!

that is the second time I have read that you have set the timing to 20 DBTDC - now gotta ask why? It is same base timing for a 7.7:1 comp ratio EA82T , not a near 9:1 EA of anysort setting of 8 to 10 DBTDC.

Glad someone uses my foolproof identity tag colour system :)

Qutoing another forum

carb 8deg btdc. including ea81 thru 89 and ea82 thru 87

mpfi with mechanical disty 185-86 25 deg btdc.

spfi (1986 and up) and mpfi 1987 and up 20 deg btdc.

if, say, you swapped an spfi onto an ea81, the timing is still 20 deg.

at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/top ... r-fiction/

I've read it at several sites. Am I incorrect?

Today finished off the linkages, air filter assy, accelerator (thanks ElFreddo for the cable end), coil, fuel hoses and dizzy. Now its onto the loom. Going well.

Nope, you are correct to set it at 20 degrees.

As I understand it the efi motors use the 20 degrees as a reference point and the ECU moves the timing around as needed.

I do know when I hook my ECU up to my laptop and have the timing value up, when the engine is revved the timing will adjust it self to suit the revs of the engine and drop back to 20 degrees when the engine returns to idle.

3 plug mpfi is 8 deg static, 4 plug mpfi is 20 deg static. Tweety, pull the plastic top off of the distributor and have a look inside. If it has mechanical weights inside it, you probably need to set it to somewhere near 8 deg BTDC. If it has an optical timing wheel, then start at 20 btdc. They are my thoughts anyway. I would be odd for Subaru to use a completely different system for the spfi.

ok.
It has a disk Doug. El Freddo said its the same dizzy as his EJ22 or similar. But I've had the cap off today and under the rotor is just a disk. So I'll start at 20 degrees. Retime it to 20 after running a few minutes.

I've been really excited about this project. I've figured out why. you mentioned Jules- that the timing adjusts itself. This concept of fuel injection (I was naive) has surprised me. The sensors for example and the capability of the ECU.
Efficiency...is the number one advantage. Worth a drop in oooomff
Just the loom to go.

when I took down the spark leads details I took them clockwise. now it seems I should have taken them down anticlockwise 1-3-4-2. am I right? 1-3-4-2 anti clockwise and 1and 3 drivers side 2 and 4 pass side? just want to get it right.

Yep definitely set it to 20 BTDC then.

Firing order on the ea81/82 is 1-3-2-4.

Image

The lead in the top of the picture is cylinder 1. It then goes around the distributor anticlockwise, 3-2-4.

As far as the efi vs carby goes. The 3 plug mpfi setup on my ea82 doesn't control acceleration enrichment as well as the weber on my ea81. Unless your really thinking about it you probably wouldn't notice, but once you do its pretty obvious. Never driven the 4 plug variant of the mpfi system so I cant comment on that but I do believe they improved on it with a better tps sensor. If the spfi is based on the 4 plug mpfi ecu with the better tps sensor no doubt it will be better then almost any accelerator pump.

drivers side 3---4 passenger side
1---2
front of car
back of trike :)

Thats how the pistons are set up ^^^ (don't ask how I did that either as it still hurts)

The EJ22 only came with a dizzy in South America New Zealand and other lucky countries :)

Bennies EA82 motor would've had an optical drive dizzy. :)

So when do we hear it running? :)
