my ea82t is doing exactly what yours is by the sound of it. under boost it cleans up a little but still sergers and hesitates but i don't think its pule pressure because when you and flooring it it pulls ok but serges.. I'm thinking the reg too. but before i pulled it out of the other car a month ago the ecs light was on. what is the ECS? because now it off in my l wagon..

ECS is the check engine light - look for a red light flashing thru the crack under the steering column then look up the code

Connect the black test connectors and turn the ignition to 'ON' and the ECS light will flash a code if there is one, or was one that has been saved.

From memory for 4 plug ea82 and ej engines. Green plugs connected to read current faults. Black plugs together to read intermittent or stored faults. Both plugs together to clear codes.

Are 3 pluggers different to this?

economy model ECU - only green plugs to read codes, fix the fault clears the code I think.Only had to read once, fixed and forgotten

Well I found the problem that was causing the cold acceleration problems - a vacuum hose wasn't plugged in beneath the intake! So I plugged that back in, started it up, had a few CEL's while it 'learned' what was going on, and now its fine :D

I'm wondering if the cruising surging thing might be the TPS a tad out of alignment??? More testing required...

well it seems that the problem hasn't completely gone away - when the car's been sitting for a few days its really easy (like 1/2 a second) to start but usually it takes a bit more time and effort when i'm using it more often... i give up!

Has anyone suffered the same problems and discovered a solution???
I did an MPFI conversion before I knew better - into a carb'd L series. I too had a surging problem that was similar to what you're experiencing. I put it down to the fuel return line being a small one for the carb and not the larger unit that the standard EFI/MPFI system uses. Replace the fuel return line for the larger unit and I'm sure you'll find the issue settles down.

It's not an easy task but worth the effort IMO.

As Gannon has mentioned, having the injectors etc serviced would be good too.

Cheers

You are in SA, is that close to Adelaide? coz there is the odd Subaru genius operating repair workshops such as Steve at Rising Sun Service.

How is it going this week ?

Yeah I'm in Adelaide, I'm becoming more and more tempted to go and see Steve cos he did the conversion in the first place! Apart from dying in a big plume of smoke on the freeway a couple of weeks ago its been ok - there's still an issue which I think is most likely fpr and/or the return line Bennie suggested but I'm going to see if I can find any fuel pump/tank filters to clean out before spending any moula

I'm still having the surging and starting issue bad.. It's giving me a 35 code - egr solinoid and where I'm at now it the solinoid is plugged in but no vacume, bypassed it to the egr valve and now I've disconnected the hose and blocked it off.. I was too wondering if its fuel problem I will get the injectors serviced and I have a bosh o44 fuel pump and 4 m of 3/8 line to bypass the smaller l series line.. But I may have to do the same with the return line. Would this cause the hard starting and surging I'm experiencing ?? I'm at a loss now! :$ thanks guys

test that solenoid that is not connected to any vacuum for the EGR. It may be a case of usual with these old things ... stuck open, stuck shut and registering a code.Test it with 12V fused to see if it operates as in open , close while providing a suction on one end or the other.........total disconnect may or may not work to trick ecu.i

My code 12/33 hasn't come up since I cleaned the connection on the thermoswitch. I ran a can of UEC thru on the weekend and while it was hard to see how much smoke came out, the idle raised itself to 1krpm and it seems to be a tad more driveable but the surging is still there and the coolant needs flushing :( endless things to spend money on!
