03' WRX speakers

This is just a point of interest type thing, for those lucky enough to be driving around in such a nice Subaru

Today my brother requested help in removing the door cards from his 03' WRX, so he could measure up and see what room is available for new speakers. He was very happy to find he had separate tweeters in the front doors from factory. Not so happy when he saw the available space for main speakers at the bottom of the door i.e, almost no space at all. From the mounting flange to a screw that pokes out of the window there is an absolute maximum of 45mm depth, and very limited space in the door card itself to space the speaker out for more depth. However in the rear door the window doesn't come down far enough to interfere with the speaker, so you have about 4 inches of possible depth! and the hole in the door is about 4" diameter so you could fit a 4" cube in there pretty much An advantage not fully utilized with the factory 15 watt speakers...tiny little things they are.

My 93 RS Liberty isn't much better.
The rears go in the strut towers and there is just enough room for 6" speakers but onlyif you undo a metal cover andl et it hang loose inside the plastic trim - I wedged it away from the speaker with a bit of rag
The fronts can go as big as 6.5" but you need to trim the underneath of the door card and space out the speaker from the door - still limited to about 55mm depth - I had to remove my top of the range mega expensive USD Audio speakers because they didn't clear the window

When I replaced the door speakers in my outback, I just used 6.5" Clarions that werent particularly deep and only have the bass setting on the headunit set at 1 or 2 so they basically operate as mid range speakers. The secret is a slimline sub under the drivers seat to handle all the bass. Looks factory, sounds awesome and doesnt have the doof doof of a large volume (read cubic capacity, not loudness) sub enclosure

I have a 12" sub in the back runing off a monoblock amp and my fronts running off a bridged 4 channel amp so I need front speakers big enough to handle the amp.
For now I have a set of JL Audio speakers in the front with the amps high pass filter set fairly high so they don't get too much bass - sounds good but would sound a lot better if the fronts were bassier.

And yes it goes doof-doof at ear bleed volumes

Trimming the door cards would be out of the question in my brothers rexie, so would a sub woofer in the boot (he needs that space for prams and such ) Might have to put bassier speakers in the rear doors since they have so much space depth wise but not alot in diameter.
