Put your battery on charge and make sure it is fully charged. Then try it again. Code 12 is fine. It sounds more like a solonoid problem or battery to me. Make sure you have got the motor earthed well. Make sure the battery is earthed well.
If all that then doesn't work with the key, try tapping the starter motor with a hammer or some thing. You can also hotwire the starter across the terminals and by pass the ignition circuit.

Yeah I agree with Brett, forget the lights, the later L Series had lights like the Liberty so they cant be left on ie: turn off with the key, so there is prolly just a simple mismatch going on there somewhere, if you are getting a click at the starter and it isnt winding over then try the steps Brett said, also have you put a spanner on the front of the motor and physically made sure it turns over and isnt siezed or jamming up somehow, also have you checked the timing belts are both intact.
