Ranex Rustbuster is crazy brutal on rust - turns the rusted steel black and lightens/powders paint if you get it on there accidentally.

Thankfully my ute came rust free, but I've used this stuff a few times before.

Paint it on very lightly as it will drip if you let excess move about - and it will bubble horridly if it pools for any length of time. If it gets on concrete, it WILL stain powerfully, so do this over dirt or gravel you're not fond of if you can. Putting cardboard or something underneath won't 100% stop it, Ranex eats through... (My driveway and rents are fairly mad at me about the stains...)

I can't wait to have my own fully prepped garage to do the same full refurbishment to a ute.

This stuff sounds potent, just what I need :) I'm kinda looking for something I can apply from inside the panel so it seeps into the seams that are starting to rust. I read penetrol seeps into every microscopic crevice but I'm not sure it converts rust. This rust buster sounds like it could do the job but may destroy the paint on the inside as well. I'll have to try both and figure out the best method to do this. I'm thinking of treating the seam rust the best I can with a converting product, then re-painting and sealing the inside of the panel to stop water getting in again followed by copious amounts of cavity wax and fish oil in every cavity I can find.

The passenger rear quarter is the worst at this point, I think water got in through the window at the top as that is rusting badly under the rubber. As the water gets in it seeps down inside to the wheel arch getting into the cracked factory seam sealer and rusting it out. I've found similar symptoms in at least 2 of the doors but not nearly as bad.

Hehe I'm already saving the pennies to get it done at a paint shop and that decision was made a long time ago ;)

Made another patch today that makes 3, none welded yet. For the weirder shapes I seem to average 2 hours per patch...well longer for this one since I had to start again half way through :(

In my search for various bits and pieces I came across a few websites that sell repair panels and patch panels which claim to have things like rear quarter panels and wheel arch panels in stock for my car at a good price. If this is true it would be an absolute gold mine for parts that I need, but the descriptions can be a bit generic since they sell similar parts for hundreds of other cars. I'd hate to put in a big order for hundreds of dollars, wait weeks for it to arrive from over-seas and find everything is completely wrong.

Has anyone bought repair panels before? Care to give me any pointers? The sites I'm looking at specifically are:

http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/subaru.html
Which lists 80-84' year model rear wheel arch for 4 door

http://www.akadia-ats.com/catalogs/inde ... spid=11880
This is a Russian site, they have "rear side panel" for 80-84' Estates, even has a picture of the panel, but this same picture is used for other panels as well :? They also list rocker panels, footboard/door sill panels and so on but all have the same picture.

If these are the right parts my resto would be so much more complete; being able to cut as much as I want out and not having to worry about hammering out patch panels but still getting a factory finish at the end.
