Look what we found?

Post by Gannon » Sun Nov 18, 2012 4:48 pm

Tom (my brother in law) came across an L series wagon that has had a turbo conversion, so he bought it.

This has got me stumped. The 2 light blue rectangles on the fuse panel have 5 diodes in each one. Ive never seen them before

Diode speculations

Post by pitrack_1 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:57 pm

Gannon,

what do the diodes wire into?

1) Are they possibly voltage drop diodes for comparison/measurement purposes?

2) Are they something other than diodes, eg tranzorbs or zener protection diodes for HV protection e.g. from ignition system?

3) Reverse polarity protection?

Yeah it runs, the fuel pump was cactus, so we put a bit of fresh fuel in the fuel line between the firewall and the fuel rail and pressurised it with an air compressor and we had it started within about 5 min. Its been sitting for 4 years but the radiator is full of bright green coolant.

Tom only bought it for the rear discs and the LSD, and Im keeping the digi dash, trip computer and variable intermittent wipers, everything else is being parted out.

According to the symbols on the front of the blue covers, they are diodes, but physically they are not the normal black cylindrical type, more pea shaped. I'll trace the wires out to see where they go

Next time your out at the car Gannon, grab the part number from the struts.
They look like 'MY' series struts as they are not offset, I wonder are they Koni inserts in an early model servicable strut?

Those diode sets are common on imported turbo looms.
I had used looms with those and I believe they are an electonic way of filtering several inputs to give the correct output for some dash lights. These were connected to options that were available on the overseas cars.
Similar to the door open light system.

I had a better look at the diodes and traced the first one back to a factory relay that clicks when reverse is selected. I ran out of light and didn't get any further. Are they specific to digi dash vehicles?

I know the digital dash has a special fuel sensor and loom that goes to the fuel tank in the tank for it to work. Not sure about the rest.

I have seen them in digital and analogue dashes. Sometimes with one set of diodes, others with two.

Ok some real info.
One of them is for a 4wd AT system.
The anodes (Bottom row with square corners) connect to
Stop light switch
Kickdown switch
wiper switch
wiper switch
int wiper relay

top row (angled corners) the single output goes to the AUTO 4WD RELAY.
Which automatically engages 4wd when any of the inputs are turned on.
Subaru, safety first:)
The other one??
I have never used them and either bypassed or removed them

Yeah Nev has mentioned the fuel sender previously, any idea what makes it different?

Where did you find that info tambox? Do you have a FSM that covers this model?

Anyway I dont have an auto so the diodes are un-necessary

AWESOME find! What a Gem!

Is it really a dual range auto? How does this work and why are we only hearing about it now? Could be a test mule??

PICS PICS PICS (more! Please ;))
