CHEAP GRIEF, EA82T, the saga continues....
besides the melted timing covers I have so far found a purplish head bolt, the upper head bolts as tight as, and the lower ones reasonably loose.
To get this far all you EA82T knowledgable ones know that I have the turbo and crossover pipe off. Got the rhs head off so far to reveal that it is cracked...bugger...just between the valves on each pot so far.
Curious to know if it is normal for the lower head bolts to leak water out as you dismantle , while water still in jackets ?
Everything is so bloody filthy, and the nose is running like a 3/4 inch tap , which is pretty hard to wipe wiff filfy hands.
Just realised EA82's are head bolts not studs like EA81. YES !
But are they also M11 threads ??

Here is a PDF document that states that cracks between the valves are of no concern and dont cause any trouble

I too are in the process of pulling down an ea82, i got the heads off to find that both HG's are blown and there is a bit of rust on the cylinder from the water that has sat in there.
I thought it was gonna be a walk in the park but its just getting more expensive the more i do.
Considering hi comp pistons (1:9) seing that i have to take em out
Good luck with it mate

Yep, the engine is out and sitting on a skid crate pallet so I can skid it around the floor. Well, EA81's use M11 for sure.
Water out head bolts OK, good.
I am determined to do this baby like it was - EA82T - so absolutely no rego or insurance hassles for starters. wanted turbo something for so long - since my first turbo drive- sort of wasn't quite expecting the push without the pedal squeeze. besides the compression test gave me roughly 980 what evers (kPa) and the specs reckon 990 is the go, so is spot on ! worth a shot
the comment re using heads cracked between valves don't make a lot of sense especially if I wanna wind up the boost
I couldn't get the pdf but recall its content
5 litres of degreaser should go a long way to cleaning things up
