EA82T torque converter bolts ..agh !!

Post by steptoe » Mon Jun 19, 2006 7:35 pm

Why oh bloody why do torque converter bolts have a solid washer like base and then a shallow hex head ? I couldn't get a decent grip on them with a ring spanner, nor could I get a half inch drive socket and bar in there....until I got aquainted in how to remove the intake manifold to get it and the water transfer pipe outta the socket and bars way!

Using the flank drive style metrinch socket was then a breeze.

Anyone use a better bolt here, like allen head or something ?

I usually replace them with a high tensile bolt with a deeper head. I also always use a six point air socket to undo them - there's much less chance of rounding them off.

i had a 3/8 drive hex socket on its way over to me but manifold removal beat it . i plan to replace the bolts with a flywheel !
