L series - How do I remove the whole dash?

Post by Smokey » Sat Jun 17, 2006 10:34 pm

How do I go about pulling the dash? Need to replace a heater core and do some welding of the floor and the dash is in the way.

Cheers,

Smokey

ok so I think this is avery hard task.... Working at night, in the open with just interior lights and a torch. Dash is all loose but still cannot get it out.....WHY?????

Seems to be still some wires attached that I cannot see on the drivers side. All the dodgy home wiring jobs without nice easy plugs make things more interesting too. I have given up for now. Will continue monday night.

Amyone who has done this have any advice for me.... I want the whole dash out of the way, to replace the whole heater assembly and do some welding on the floor. Car needs to be driveable w the dash out too.

The main wiring loom plugs are bolted to the rear of the dash under the drivers side (where the engine loom joins up to the dash loom).
Get a torch and stick your head under, they come in behind the fusebox.

This is probably why it isnt coming out! I have some pictures of the dash on & off if you get desperate.

Thanks Damo666. I have pulled these out already, both undid the plugs (three from memory all different colours) and took the two bolts out that hold the bracket in place. Still no joy. Im at work atm, so will have another look tonight. Its going into the shop, hopefully without the dash so will have to get it sorted one way or another.

Cheers.

I suppose all bolts removed by now ? did you remove the instrument surround by it self? you may as well if you intend to drive with the dash out.
Its easier then to get at all the plugs, so undo all the knobs, light sw,fan sw, etc,
Its not necesssary to remove steering wheel either......
one other thing that holds it down is the heater cable, goes from the dash slider knob to down below to the heater, best i think to unlatch it from the bottom end, its tricky tho,esp in poor light.

when you get it all back together, bet you'll have some spare bolts/screws

Hey Fred,

Yep romoved tha souround completely and threw it on the back seat. Have unattached the speedo cable but not the other two wire bunches as I can't see any clips to undo them. All left hand side is undone and free to come out. Heater cable is undone at the slider (top end), thats gonna be fun to put back together. Nooottttt..

OK - the other one that got me was the cable for the drivers side vent. It also has a cable similar to the heater control cable.

Damo666 - U get the prize, thats what it was, too bad I didn't read your post first. I had a few more wires that needed to be removed and that cable to the drivers vent. I overlooked it as I assumed it would be part of the dash as it is on the left/passenger side.

But still cannot get the dash out, just doesn't seem to be enough room around the steering column to fit the dash out and over. The windscreen is also kinda in the way. I might be over looking something here too. Doesn't really matter too much though, as there is now enough room to get to the heater core and to do the welding work on the left/passenger side floor. Car needs to be driveable too, so methings there are a few things on the dash that need to be pluged in like the ignition wires. I also have an imobilizer that could give me trouble if not connected, not sure.

If I can get it out good, but if i can't get it any further thats ok too as there is enough room to get what needs doing done.

P.s Smoov I found some of your CD's that must have dissapeared behind the dash at some stage. Will return them to you one day, small incentive for a drive....

Thanks for the helpfull and prompt advise as allways guys!!!!
