EA82T Air intake qusestions (*now with pics*)

Post by wrx_nut » Sat Jun 17, 2006 8:08 pm

just converted my L-series wagon to an EA82T and have a few questions about air intake....

I plan to do a bit of offroading as it has a 3" Lift and 27's so im wondering what the best setup for it is...

i have a 3plug ecu which has the flapper type airflow meter, can/does a pod filter fit on the end of this with an adapter plate ? ie-is there room??

I have a hotwire type airflow meter in the shed which is a little smaller...can i use this instead of a flapper type?? therefore a pod might fit a bit easily?

or is it best to mount the original air box in and use that?

any help and/or pictures would be great

thanks wrx_nut :D

Wouldn't bother with a pod filter if the factory airbox fits up nice. Only reason I run a pod on my coupe is because it's simpler. There is minimal performance gain to be made, the ricer's love them though because they make a lot of induction noise.

In an offroader you'd really have to want one to warrant one. Cleaning could be an issue too, although the people I know who have them in their offroaders do OK I think.

if you are going to use one for of road id get an oil filled type one that way you can clean and mantain it better and they work better.

yer i was leaning towards the pod filter becuause it is simplier and i was told you get a good note from the turbo through it but it doesnt fit with the standard intake pipe to the turbo with the flapper type AFM...

thinking of getting a right angle adapter to fit and see how i go then

I'm using a pod filter for the simple fact that it was simpler than converting the whole airbox (and I didn't have an airbox!).

Seems to work ok, keeps the dust out!

yep ive heard there pretty good performance wise but its just a tad hard to fit in the engine bay of an L-series with an EA82T and the flapper type AFM....

if it was the hotwire AFM which is a little smaller i think it would fit in

wrx_nut, I dont think you can run the hotwire AFM with the 3 plug ECU, it will produce the wrong value for the tune, needs the 4 plug ECU. I believe the flapper is more reliable in the long run.

I am going to convert mine to foam/oil pod, that offers quality filtration to the crap paper element in the restrictive intake of the standard airbox (badly dusted intake found in mine). I know that the exposed pod will be illegal, so I will enclose it via an enclosure with cold air intake. This wont happen for a while, but I have a design planned....

here is what ive ended up doing

Image

air flow meter is now on a 45 degree angle to the turbo intake

to allow room to do so ive cut out the tin bracket that is welded near the window washer bottol and carbon canister in the engine bay

Image

yet to be primed and painted

in the process of making brackets for pod and AFM, might even make up a heat sheid

i know this thread is a little old now but ill tell ya how i did it.
i got a few pieces of PVC pipe from bunnings and a 90 degree elbow and an adapter plate n stuck em together. i relocated the other little filter thingy and it just fit above the headlight wires. and i had a long k&n pod as well. then i made a cold air intake and fiberglass enlosure.
It worked great and u can feel the power gain.

n.b. also if u cant be stuffed doin that there is this flexible pipe called memorex hose u can get at supercheap auto which will do the same job. i know coz i work there.

its 3" tubing in 3 different colours!!! red blue and black!
as the name suggests u jut attach it to ur plate adaptor and then to ur pod filter with the attached hoseclamps. i think theyre about $20-$30.

...And you can beat the price on all product we stock !!
:D

Yeah I am running a very crappy POD filter at the moment but I'm planning to go back to the factory box and paper filter asap. Need something better than the POD for offroading. Looks like I'm going to have to delete that bracket from the engine bay too to fit it.

Andrew, why cant you go for an oil/foam element type like Finer Filter or similar (other brand doesnt come to mind at the moment)?

These are designed for offroad, just dont over oil them as they stuff up the hotwire AFM reading.
