For a weber, get a second hand one for around $100.
Then you might need to put a rebuild kit through it. $20-50
And you will need to buy an adapter plate. Less than $50.
Or buy a new one with the adapter for more than $500-700.
Search for a thread titled something like power upgrades for older EA engines. It's by Barron Von Chicken Pants. It has lots of ideas.
Note higher octane fuel is only worth it if you advance your timing and up your compression).
If you can drive your L series for a while I would be pulling apart your current engine and swing what's wrong. Maybe just a new gasket kit and your all good. Though it may also be a full rebuild/ new engine.
