Jayson's 1977 DL 1600 2door
My son Jayson (who will sign up soon) has been doing his preapp at TAFE as a Panel Beater/Spray Painter. He gets his lic in 1 year and wanted to do his own project. We spotted this little 2 door on Gumtree a few months back but the price was a little exxy, so we thought we'll just keep looking. Last week it reappeared on Gumtree with a lower price and open to offers, so we called the owner and ended up driving her home. Her EA71 runs sweet az and has an amazing amount of get up and go for an old girl. Here's some pics I took this morning...

There used to be a young girl lived a couple of doors up from me about 15yrs ago that had a mint cond green one of these as a first car, I always felt embarrased for her driving an ugly old banger, it's funny how times and opinions have changed since then.......Love it.

Nice one! but I can't help but notice there aren't many dents in it, how's he supposed to practice on that?
Consider me jealous, you hardly ever see those for sale around here even in bad condition.

Saw it today, trust me there is enough rust to keep him busy for a year or two but considering it's age and condition it's pretty straight and lays a good skid lol.

To be technically correct 'coupe' is a french word and it relates to the volume of space inside the cabin (an't remember what the maximum volume is to be called a coupe is though). It has nothing to do with the number of doors, or whether the cars is based on a sedan or a stand-alone model.
Of course manufacturers can call a car whatever they like - hence the Mercedes CLS Coupe which is as large inside as the Tardis

The MY wagon will still be built but I'm hoping it will be an offroad vehicle (not a low rider street car like he wanted) and this 2 door will not be touched until the MY wagon is completed.TOONGA wrote:now there's a project to be proud of
I must ask whats going to become of the MY wagon project?

Very true about the dents but there is plenty of rust to contend to.Silverbullet wrote:Nice one! but I can't help but notice there aren't many dents in it, how's he supposed to practice on that?

Yes we have been trying to buy a friends 1976 coupe but he will never budge
Sorry.. OP edited to keep your sanitysublime wrote:Ok just to be pedantic, that is a two door sedan not a coupe.
The cowl (underneath the dash) is the biggest rust problem on these! Not impossible to put right but somewhat complicated.
Yeah, it has plenty of rust in the usual places but it's going to get the full rotisserie treatment, so plenty of pics and write ups to follow.
hehehe.. love the EA71d_generate wrote:Saw it today, trust me there is enough rust to keep him busy for a year or two but considering it's age and condition it's pretty straight and lays a good skid lol.

He's hoping. It may be some time but a least it's not going to the crushertaza wrote:Sure is. Had a drag against my stock EA82 L-Series and it left the L for dead!
It's going to be a machine when restored
Thanks Ken but I don't mind calling it a 2 door sedan.. it's still rare and bets an L.Seriesniterida wrote:Thread HIJACK !!

Hmmmm... The origins of word coupe are from the French word 'couper', which basically means 'to cut' or 'chop down'. Hence the number of doors does not matter. Usually there is a lower roof line and less interior space (compare the DL 2 door sedan roof to the GSR coupe).niterida wrote:Thread HIJACK !!

Yes the Mercedes CLS, BMW 5 Series GT and Audi A7 (Don't forget the old Rovers!) are all examples of this. Although they are all large (relatively) the roof lines are 'cut' and there is less space than the equivalent sedan.

To be honest I think the 2 door sedan is far rarer than either the coupe, 4 door sedan or hardtops!
I have three coupes at the moment (and a previous one that went to the crusher) and they seem to be on eBay from time to time BUT when was the last time anyone saw a 2 door? I have only seen one once and that was over 20 years ago...
Good luck with the restoration! If I can help let me know! I have a few laying around...
I hope you do not mind but I thought I would add some pictures of my 1974 1400 DL Sedan... Just for inspiration!

still of the same opinion of the UGLY I have long time had, dirty, rough beaten and uncared-for-look, like any old poobox - tidy them up or make 'em go fast and my like meter changes to a more positive position ...And will not forget (until alzheimers cuts in) the little 100 mph buzz by - likely a GSR in early 80's on the Hume highway between Goulburn and Yass !

Rust is going to be our biggest hurdle but one I'm sure we can both handle.
Cheers, I think we are going to need that luck.sublime wrote:Good luck with the restoration! If I can help let me know! I have a few laying around...
I wouldn't mind a couple of better doors and a boot lid if you have spare?
Not at all mate. Mighty fine looking sedan you have there. One to hang onto for sure.sublime wrote:I hope you do not mind but I thought I would add some pictures of my 1974 1400 DL Sedan... Just for inspiration!
