Hey
So Ive got a liberty that is using shit tonnes of oil - in the order of around 4.5 to 5.5 l between 6000km services. Way more than any other car Ive owned.
Its weird because it runs great, doesnt stink like burning oil, doesn't smoke, doesn't drip oil onto the ground and all 4 plugs are the correct colour.
I'm happy to keep to keep putting oil in untill something goes wrong or I notice something, looks like there are plenty of spare EJ22s around but I'm just wondering is this something old libs are prone to? Is it just normal for them to use a bit more than other cars?
Its a '93 with 260,000, always serviced at regular intervals and driven responsibly.
I think it uses more when you do short trips, so around town driving rather than road trips.

My Forester is similar (EJ20) but 90,000km less km but burns a litre to 2 more for that many km. Mine smokes like a train though!
Its probably either the valve stem seals or oil rings.
At the cost of what an EJ22 is it could be worth replacing it but then again you don't know the history of another engine.
It will need to be pulled to do the rings or seals.

Nup no smoke that ive noticed, no black on the rear bar and yep that is about a sumps worth of oil. Completly confused.
I havent done the old coast down a hill then full throtle test yet so stem seals might be crook. but yeah i would think i'd stil notice smoke.
The only thing i can think of is the cats burning off the smoke somehow. But ive seen plenty of cars that would have cats smoking like a bushfire. And I'd expect the plugs to still be black. I have no idea.
Reckon its worth rebuilding a 22?
Maybe this could be an excuse for a 25...
