Just my 2 cents worth though.
Taza
Yes, this is for my L Series.

I'm not sure the liftgate struts would be able to handle the weight of a spare tyre.
Currently I carry the spare tyre in the boot.

Maybe I could make a custom rear tube bumper that can swing away, allowing the lift gate to open.
Not allowing the lift gate to open is my biggest beef.

Unless...
I could re-engineer the back window to open, independent of the lift gate.

Went for a little offroad today with a few guys with other subies in Perth.

We all got some damage but i think mine ended the worse :(

Ripped a fender liner out (first time and yet ive done thousands of km of sand driving), broke the rear bumper, ripped off the whole f***ing nudgebar and my spotties.

Then to top off all the darn cosmetics(which i wasn't really worried about) I got bogged in some soft sand, tried to reverse and BANG! reverse keeps popping out, I can use it barely at all and when I start the car theres a clunk sound. Im thinking gearbox mount??
Goes in the gear fine and you can come off the clutch just pops into neutral when you put any pressure on from the accellerator.

And truth be told I am actually going much easier on the car, even offroad I wasn't going as hard as the others.
Sorry to hear that mate. :o

Nope, the gear itself is fine.

I went to a Subaru and VW specialist this morning before work in Balcatta and the bloke their said somethings propbaly come loose and isn't holding it there. Then once torque is pushed through it, it just pops out and inot neutral.

Gonna look at another box for the future and most likely a front and/or centre lsd's.

Another one from a first gen foz with 4.11 diffs and 1.447 low range.
Then just chuck in a front lsd and leave the centre as that can be done without the box having to come out to the best of my knowledge.

But since the car is r**ted as is, both engine, gearbox and the body is in average condition maybe just chuck the supercharger on and thrash the sh*t out of it till it dies. Its not really worth fixing and does currently still go. im sure will will take another good hammering before totally dieing. then when its completely stuffed get just another car.

But im still thinking.

Yeah mine has a bit of rust on the bottom of the door seals and around the windscreen. I guess that happens when you live near the beach and get the sea breeze, plus offoading in sand.

Mines been a great little car bar all the issues. I will never again buy a car with no service history!

I would go and buy another one in a heartbeat.

I did however have one last thought for what I could do. Get my Foz home (700km away) and let it sit there and as money comes(while at uni) in I can build a custom gearbox, possibly another engine, bullbar and all the likes. Plus then I don't have to worry about needing to drive it.
Then buy a cheapo L-Series thats reliable, leave it stock bar from a new stereo and drive that around.

For the L series. Big day
* Installed (from the wreckers) another inner tailgate trim (old one had holes drilling into it to hold it onto the tailgate with cable ties)
*installed wreckers supplied sun visors left and right as the original drivers visor wouldnt stay up.
*installed rear shocks and springs from "failed" 2" lift kit wreckers purchase. KYB shocks and King Springs. (see post re L series lift kit). Front shocks (KYB and King Springs to be installed at a later date)
*replaced leaking 1/4" cooling hose on front of engine (at front of carby)
*installed new front speakers from a clearance sale from REPCO into the doors. 180W max x 6" for $8.00 (yes 8 bucks)
*lubricated spare wheel clamp as it was a stuck
*replaced light/indicator/wiper cluster from wreckers so now the lights dont go off at 100ks/hr any more . Very handy.
*Oh yes, most important. Cleared the shed enough to get the 82 MY tourning wagon out of the weather and into the shed for 30 year worth of TLC.

would be good to get a forester up to that standard given time and money, but i would probably start with a 2nd gen if i had the choice

Today I made some good progress on my front guard.

For the last year and half I've had a bullbar with no 'bumper' or guard underneath. The one attached the bullbar when I bought it was a PIA fibreglass thing that maintained the original factory shape - useless! What's the point of having a bullbar if you don't gain some improvement in departure angles... so off it went and every since the front end has been a little 'naked'.

So the last few days has seen a bit of progress here and there, whereas today I finally managed to get it all tacked and fits well. So went ahead and seam welded it all up, here it is sanded ready for paint:

And with the first coat of etch-primer:

Very happy with how it's looking, learned lots of tricks doing this little project which will help when building my rear bar next week!

Cheers,
Owen.
