flywheel VS crossmember?

i remember some one had flywheel to crossmember meeting when EJ'ing a L with the AWD box. no lift and standard mounts.
if they are still floating around how high did the engine needed to be lifted?

i got around to changing my engine mounts from round with locating pins

to the square mounts with no locating pins

but now the flywheel has started making bad noises

Sure it's the flywheel? Something would have to be a fair way out of place for the flywheel to touch the crossmember. I've had the header pipe just touching the crossmember, which transmitted vibrations all over the shop.

Have you bent that little metal inspection plate under the flywheel? Ive done that on my RX and I somehow need to bend it back

Very unlikely that the flywheel would ever touch the crossmember. I'm going to go along with Gannon and say it's the little tin dust plate under the engine that is touching the flywheel.

What engine in what car are we talking here?

Definately not going to hit then unless you are missing both engine mounts. Also recommend engine mount wedges or crossmember mod too... unless you're planning on buying lots of engine mounts

When I read this thread title I had an image of someone throwing the flywheel out of the bell housing and through the engine crossmember - it has happened, but not in a subaru, well, I've never heard of one from a subaru anyway.

Glad to hear it's just a question about noise. I've got EA engine mounts in Ruby Scoo, will have them back again soon anyway, and there's no noises from anything touching the engine crossmember.

So it's as RSR and Gannon have said - that little dust plate. I've read very recently of others who take it out and leave it out. I don't recommend this, it's there for a reason. For me this would be to keep rocks and mud out - yes I'm sometimes that stupid or naive!

What you'll probably have to do is lift the engine and gearbox high enough to lever this little plate away from the flywheel - just watch your CV joints and radiator hoses!

well i dont think it was the cover unless it was pushed up really hard to put strain on the engine when its trying to run.
shimmed the engine up with a couple washers between the mounts and engine and it now runs fine. no noise and the bonnet still shuts

That's odd. I would look at the crossmember and see if there's wear marks on there? If there is then you must have something else not aligned properly.

I'd definately say the round mounts are stuffed and really don't suit the EA crossmember very well. I would change them for the square type asap.

yeah thats when i discovered the problem. I had round mounts with the pin's. I switched them for some square ones from a 98 ej25 outback, then it hit!
About 5mm i spaced the engine up from the mounts.
I dont want to lift the motor out again so i will wait till something breaks
