Anyone in the car insurance game?

I am looking and getting a Victorian "Club Permit" from Vicroads rather than 12months full registration. Club permits are allowed if you are member of an approved car club and gives you 90 days of road use for your car. Full registration is $500 and club permits are $88 plus $30 club membership.

Only problem is getting insurance on a car requires full rego. I know Shannons have an insurance for unreg cars, as long as the cars don't move on their own power.

Any ideas?

When my Subaru is complete/starts its going to get club registered, but if you done have a need to have it registered and you need to drive it somewhere you can always get a permit for the day and you can put additional days on it if needed for a small price, this method is good if you are driving it to your mechanic or panel beater, its also useful to save some cash for when your car is ready to be club registered or fully registered.

As for insurance, you might want to get it insured, you never know if some idiot decides to take it from your home or where ever you keep it. If i was you just call up and see what other places will do, I know with shannons they are good, but call up other places and compare prices.

I know what Subaruby's doing - saving some money on rego by moving from full to club rego. It's good that they've changed the use of the club rego to something that's more in line with an enthusiasts use of their vehicle.

I'm sure we'll be seeing more of Subaruby in the bush, even if she does have funny coloured plates - or are you allowed to keep your current plates inline with what SA has?

Just remember as well as having to be a member of an approved car club you still need to satisfy this requirement: (from vicroads)
in the case of a club historic vehicle that is not a street rod, a current certificate of roadworthiness or a letter from a scrutineer authorised by the club, stating that the vehicle is safe for use on the road
As for insurance, double check with shannons. I'm sure they would do it out of anyone else. I have a 'laid up' car insured with them full comp and it's cheap but I still have peace of mind.

I'm a fan of the new 90 day 'being able to drive your car' rules for the club permit rego.

Club permit should be full rego, its just restricted use. It's not like your car is "unregistered" the other 275 days of the year like it is with temporary registration. Either way i'd go with Shannons, i've had nothing but good experiences with them so far.

If you get 45 day rego you can change it to 90 day whenever you like.

I personally like the idea of joining a club too, it can be good fun to share your passion for cars with other people. Only issue i'm having is finding one that suits me and what cars i have. Thinking we need to start a classic subaru club!

Starting a club is a good idea but there are many hurdles to being a vicroads approved club.

90 days is a good amount, most cars on CH rego get driven much less than that.
in addition, i'm led to believe that your car has to be 25-30 years old to qualify anyway.

i'd stick with finding a club that best suits you and is approved, so you can get your car club rego'd that way.

Ok so got so got an online quote from Shannons, they have an option to select "Club Permit". price $163

Also found out racv have car insurance for veteran, vintage & classic vehicles. With Racv you must do less than 9000k's per year. Price $62

Yep its 25 years which my car is, which is why I am looking into it.

Other thing is for a club permit you need a rwc every year.

So from full reg at $540 plus $350 insurance ($890)

Down to club reg $66.10 plus club membership $30 plus insurance $62 plus RWC $100 ($259)

This may make it easier to keep more cars than I need.

I'd go with Shannons.
Their terms are better, but read both for yourself to decide.

The vehicle can be approved as safe by the club safety officer which is a substitute for a RWC in the case of club registration. You also don't need to have your car inspected at Vicroads for club rego, which means you don't need an appointment for registration. Going through this right now with my Valiant.
