Water injection..experiences and opinions please

Post by BRUMBERTY » Thu May 25, 2006 2:20 pm

Howdy all,
Interested to hear what people have to say about the topic.

I am planning to inject via 2 375cc injectors in the inlet tubing (after supercharger).

As I am dedicated LPG, I have a redundant fuel tank, lines and pump all in place and waiting for a tankfull of water.

Will an electric fuel pump (NA) supply enough pressure to vaporise the water?
Thanks
Matt

I don't have any first hand experience on this topic, but after following Oversteer's trials and tribulations with water injection closely I can offer a bit of info...

I take it the electric fuel pump you're thinking of using is an EFI pump? Apparently these pack it in quick pushing water, something to do with water conducting electricity (fuel doesn't) and the pump internals aren't sufficiently shielded.
The 375cc injectors are fuel delivery items? Why not a mist nozzle? Would be easier to set up.

using a fuel pump to pump water? i've read everywhere that water will just destroy it, still if its not worth anthing to you it should work for a little while.....
same wih the fuel injector, it ether won't work or won't work for long?
Still I haven't tried these, so give it a go?

I can say though to do it properly is not so easy, and you got to be sure engine is at running temp, rpm is up, etc etc etc,,,

you mention using your fuel tank ? for water? what about rust?

Just a little bit under heavy load Steve, I can't hear it, but my ears are shot from diving too much.
My Mate can pick it up though.

I have been doing some research into it and like what I read.

Those injectors are gonna be way to big, the amount of water should only be around 10% of the fuel injected

See if you can find out what psi those garden misters operate at and find a 12V pump that will fit the job,.. maybe one of those backpack herbicide sprayers
The have a tank that you can presurise at manifold/boost pressure and then the water tank will always be at boost pressure, and your pump will provide the extra psi to spray into the motor.

Saw it on a site somewhere.

The fuel tank is steel to I think, and I don't know if it's coated on the inside, it might rust out.

What kind of supercharger you running, on which engine??

...you shouldn`t need it for a LPG set-up, maybe re-curve you dizzy.

But anyway, to do water injection correctly you need at least 80psi pressure if not 100 to vapourise water/meth corectly and the nozzels we use are either 1 gph(gallon per hour) or 3 gph in 2 stages(boosted applications).

Needs to be tuned for, allows ~3 degrees more timing under full load and ~10% more boost with no increase in detonation...AND an simular increase it power.

Altho it does add more power(when tuned for it!!) its primary use is a safety measure.

We use surflo pumps rated to 100psi, FI pumps last surprisingly long with distilled water(don`t use anything else for a WI system)....but using a fuel tank and steel lines wouln`t work at all, as with the injector, that would corrode and bind very quickly.

If you use a washer pump and plastic bottle, plumbed in before the blower it will work fine. You must jet [restrict] the flow until pinging just stops. Use a micro switch to activate the pump at 2/3 to 3/4 throttle. Place a vacumn switch/solinoid to stop siphoning. It sounds simple but I have used it about 10 times on blown cars and it works well

Vaporise!

Post by julian » Wed Jun 28, 2006 8:33 pm

If injecting before the compressor make sure that the water is well and truly vaporised. With a turbo spinning at upwards of 100,000 rpm, sucking in largish droplets would have the same effect as injecting sand-

Lots of smoke and BANG meant sooby needed a new turbo!

Naaa Julian, its got rotors!

The new donk is supercharged not turbo'd.
I hear you though, i am awaiting the nozzles package atm.

on the camaro that I play with, we use methonal injection and it works just by taking positve pressure from below the blower presurising a methonal tank that forces the methanol back up to a couple of carb jets that are situated at the top of the carbs aIt is too simple and doesnt have any moving parts. The set up is basically to keep the motor cool and works a treat
