That does it, someone needs to go out on an expedition to every NZ wreckers yard and scour every old subie or even the engine pile for this engine/cylinder heads :)

Would make a pretty cool YT documentary though, hunting down the mystical EA81 Safari engine :mrgreen:

Unfortunately anything as old is these is pretty much crushed or smelted complete these days, unless someone knows what they are looking at, it's hard enough to find a rough brumby to rob parts from, let alone something more desireable.

The NZ climate is pretty hard on japanese steel from the 70's and 80's

eh ford went up the preverbial creek when they stopped producing the X series... cant say i dont like the eb- ed,s tho

theyre not at a single point, theyre on the whole path. One of the people on the boat at the time happened to be a Nissan rally guy from america apparently he got some of the good parts off it. The was talk in the 90's about going out and getting everything to document it but sense provailed.

Been done already. Paul from Subarwreck spent 6 months in newzealand hunting down parts and sending them back. Also got a load from Japan. There arent many places to look.

most never made it to the road?
Its the same with all the HSVs most specials get to the show room and put in the shed.

yea theres 5 left the only 2 driven on the road are in new zealand and aus the new zealand one was found in a wrecker and was restored or repaired back to factory the rest are in museums etc i think theres one in the S.A motor museum

!
Noticed the thermostat housing at the top and manifold looks to be hacked off at the ends to keep water circulation job

Must have been a screamer in its day :)

If one was crazy enough, they could weld the supports for an EJ manifold onto an EA81 then run it with a turbo and injection.

at least until it went pop :) but Im sure it would be fun up until that point :)

Yes, it is an EA71, but I was thinking about the Single Port that the Standard and the Fat-Case EA71's Heads does have, and this thing looks like it has Two.


Well, in another note; There is one Second Gen Subaru Leone RX coupe with one of those EA81S Engines (with Four port Heads and Twin Downdraft Weber Carbs, each one directly bolted to the Head) from the Safari Rally, is Now For Sale in New Zealand!!!
