Using foglight wiring for driving lamps?

Post by wombataaron » Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:32 am

Hi, was just curious if anyone who has replaced their front bar with a bullbar and added driving lamps to the bullbar used the wiring from the old foglights to wire up the new lights? The car is a 2000 outback btw:)

You could, but you would have to change the wiring at the switch so that they would only operate when on high beam

Best to put new wiring (3 or 4mm) in as most likely you're going to use stronger wattage globes than your standard fog lights. Plus like Gannon said, you'll need them to run in conjuction with your high beams.. that's part of the law on spot lights (need to turn off when on low beam) but not required on fog lamps.

I got a bullbar on my 03 outback and put driving lights on.

I ran new cabling of a better grade than what is in the foglight wiring, as the foglights only need 55W and so that is what the cabling is allowed for, while driving lights usually are 100W.

However i used the fog light switch. If your interested in using the fog light switch for your driving lights i can do a bit of a write up explaining how to do it, it just utilises an otherwise useless switch and makes it nice and sleek and matching with everything else.

EDIT: There is one issue with my wiring that i need to clear up first but.

That would be fantastic, yeh i don't wanna add another switch, thought it would look better if i use that switch cause its gonna be doing nothing when the bullbar goes on this week, how advanced skill is replacing the wire with thicker stuff?

I'd use the existing foglamp wiring to switch a decent relay, and run 3-4mm wiring direct from the battery (via a fuse and high-beam-switched relay) to operate your new driving lamps.
Not very hard to do.
