best engine / gearbox for Brumby resale

Hey Guys - was going to keep both of my Brumbys once they are finshed (in 10yrs time !!) but then I thought I don't really need 2 so I thought I would build one and sell it to fund a really good build of the second one. So then I thought what would be the best engine/box combo to put in it to make the most from the resale ??

I have a choice of :

EJ22 (needs at least a head gasket - maybe more)
EJ25 OSHC - good running motor out of my Outback
EZ30D - low 29000kms

I also have a choice of boxes that go with the above motors in the same order but if necessary I can change them :

5spd 3.7 manual
4spd 4.44 auto
4spd 4.11 auto

So which combo do you think would be the best/easiest to sell and given that it will be running full (and I mean absolutely every last nut, bolt, spacer, bracket, mount etc) Liberty/WRX running gear (as in brakes, suspension, steering, etc) and will have been through a bare shell rebuild and repaint, how much do you think each option would sell for ?

I reckon an EJ25 with the 5speed Manual.... but I like manuals. Otherwsie the EZ30 with the 4.11 or 4.44 auto.
I could actually consider buying this off you as I really want a brumby and if its been done up pretty much from scratch then that would be excellent!
One with the Impreza/wrx/sti World Rally Blue would be awesome :cool:

Yes - EZ30 (6cyl 3.0litre) is only 40mm (or is it just 20mm?) longer than EJ motor. Still a lot of other work to be done to make it fit properly and actually run in an L series....

EJ25 (SOHC) with the 5 speed.

Reasons are (IMO) the EJ25 will give you the best power range but can't understand why you are going to put the EJ22 heads on it? unless you are looking to do the same as me and run carby and dizzy on it. And the manual is because it's a lot more fun :)

make a franken motor you have the stuff and that way you can do a write up of it with your mistakes so when i do it to my next subie i know what not to do :twisted:

World rally Blue, 2 inch lift, 14" sunnys, muddys, spotlights, bull bar, sports bar with spottys, elec windows, EJ'd with turbo, scoop, speakers and tv in the back!

EJ25 and manual would be my choice too - but the EJ25 ECU is from an auto - not sure how much bother it is to change to manual ??

I was thinking of putting the EJ22 heads on it to get higher compression and more power. Oh and then it would leave me with a low compression EJ22 and that could only lead to one thing :twisted:

Well if you're selling the first one I'd go with what Paul has suggested. But as for re-sale price? Good question. You'll usually get a better return from a stock brumby that's been restored than one that's been heavily modified.

Then for the second one go all out with the EZ30 and manual trans sleeper style :twisted: There won't be any need for forced induction as you'll already shit your pants with the power delivery of the flat 6! Try and keep the radiators out the front where they should be, not in the ute tub ;) That'd be schweet!

Yeah I'm leaning towards the EJ25 - but then the EZ30 has to go in my Outback to replace the EJ25.

So the next question is auto (4.44) or manual (3.7) ??
And leave the SOHC or go to the EJ22 heads ?

The second Brumby is getting a turbo rotary and DCCD 5 speed with 4.44's :twisted:

No probs.. just give the wiring to Subarino and problem solved. He'll remove all the unnecessary junk (auto wiring included) out and leave the remaining wires all marked ready for fitting to you Brumby.

Not sure there is a lot of differences in the combustion chambers between the 2. I'd suggest you leave both engines untouched, as the EJ25 with all it's later model heads, manifold, etc.. will be a lot better than a mixed match setup.

Sounds like the easiest way to go.. rather than trying to convert the Brumby to EZ.

Both engines you have are SOHC so no real advanges but to save buying lots of gaskets :)

If the EZ30 ends up in the outback you HAVE to have it mated to a MANUAL!!! These go wickedly sick with a manual!

i've seen a few write ups on the "FRANKENMOTOR" on US sites and they seem to be highly recommended.. if i remember rightly you have to drill a hole in the head gasket for one cooling port and other then that its a bolt up affair.. dont quote me on it though

+1 franken for me .. for no other reason then i would like to see someone in australia do it.

im sticken to frankenmotor one guy suggests a 51MLS head gasket whatever that is haha something to do with cylinders sticking out of the block

Well bugger me - all these years and I always assumed EJ22 was DOHC :oops:
And yes I can tell the difference but I've never actually had anything to do with them since I only ever played with turbo motors. And the one I have I literally pulled it out of the wreck I bouhgt and threw it in the back corner of the shed without paying it any attention. I had to go out and have a look at it to double check !!

Car will be built simply to sell it. Would think with an EJ25, bare shell rebuild, Liberty underpinnings etc it would have to be worth $8k ??

Only the mighty 22B had the DOHC EJ22 all the rest were SOHC but there has been a lot of mix/match engines being built out there.

I think a clean Brumby with an EJ in it would probably get 8k to the right buyer but that seems a lot of work to go through just to sell it.
