My Brumby motor G Box options
My Brumby motor G Box options
Hmm! with the new regulations coming into play as of the 30th of this month I might have to postpone the EJ20 transplant I had planed.
But I Just realised the 5sp HiLo L series box I have will bolt straight up to an EA81. I don't want to touch the EA81 in my Brumby cause it runs so dam good. But I have been collecting EA81 parts and motors for some time now to do an aero conversion and the motor I just got from a wreck blows lots of smoke so It might be a likley canditate for rings and recoed heads, maybe good building practice for my aero engine.
So here are my thoughts with what I have at hand.
Hone, re ring and do a reco on the heads myself.
Match port the inlet and exhaust ports and match the valve seats to the ports.
Lap the valves.
Match port inlet manifold to heads.
" "" exhaust to heads.
New welsh plugs.
new front and rear main seals
decent carb.
Fit the 5 speed. (EA81 flywheel, pressure plate and EA82 clutch plate)
fit the L series seats, carpet and center console.
Then when the dust settles on the new regulations and an engineer is available in Coffs relook at the EJ20 retrofit.
Please share your thoughts.

Sounds like a starting plan and all good work to the EA.
I'd go the EA82 5spd and I'm sure there is plenty of threads on here to help you out.

Please go right ahead
I'd like to see ways of mounting the L series 2 piece tailshaft that goes to the rear diff. Thinking of doing this conversion to my car, along with everything else

Will it ever end!?

well I bought an EJ20 BUT drove 5 hrs each way to Newcastle and waited at his house for 4 hrs till dark, for him not to show up. Nor answer his phone after probably 50 attempts to call him. We could not move the motor and Gbox because of where thay were situated. I am less tham impressed and will be taking action.
BTW I don't think the EA82 will fit in the brumby cause it is much wider than the EA81

Depending on your EA81 flywheel with the 5 speed. If it is smaller diameter 200mm or 8 ", you use a gemini drive plate with the EA81 flywheel and clutch pressure plate.
Was going to suggest Silverbullet Sam takes on the next mod for his beast - exactly this !! The two piece tailshaft centre bearing mounting is easy... seats out, car on stands, two pieces of flat bar 4mm thick 40mm ? wide, drill bits, drill, rivets and gun, piece of string to run from front to back as a guide, then some decent nuts and bolts to finalise the position.
I and a few others have fitted EA82 to a standard height Brumby with about 4mm to clear each side.

Thanks for all your input fellas. The EJ20 is due tomorrow so it will get first preference.
anyone want a MPFI EA82 with a blown head gasket. No lash noise. 240,000Ks, new alternator. Timing belts replaced 30,000Ks ago, 70,000k remaining.
Replacing the head gaskets will fix the typical oil leaks that EA82's have. I have a video of the EA82 running before I pulled it out.

Hmm now my options get more complicated.
The EJ20 will be going in for sure.
But it came with a 5 speed HiLo range box.
NOW do I make it AWD with the EJ20 G box and another Diff (which I have)
OR do I fit the L series HiLO box and make the car FWD/4WD.
What to do !

OMG. That sounds complicated.
Are yas trying to suggest that the low range on the EA box is lower than the Low range on the EJ.

Thanks ! With that on board. I will go back to the original plan of EJ20 with L series 5 speed. I realy enjoyed the lo range of my old L series wagon. and the splines are the same as the brumby Cv's. It will be FWD/4WD but what I will miss out on is the (Launch) type of acceleration you get at the lights with AWD.
Just have to make an adaptor between motor and g box.

If you go to the effort of the L low range in the EJ gearbox you would be silly NOT to swap the diff input stubs too - they're held by a circlip and slot in easily. Here's a pic of the clip in question:revmax wrote:Thanks ! With that on board. I will go back to the original plan of EJ20 with L series 5 speed. Well worth it for the best of both worlds - you wouldn't be looking back with this setup in a brumby!
Cheers
Bennie
Hmm. Thanks for the tips. If yas reckon it is worth it the I will look into it more.
Will I run the Forester rear diff then, providing it is the same ratio as the EJ transaxle.
Getting in depth now.

Hmm. The EJ box/diff is around 4.11 or 4.44 to 1 (not sure) with this ratio and 13" tyres it will be reving its tits off at 100km
