Power steering into a Brumby Q's
Power steering into a Brumby Q's
I would like to put power steering into my Brumby, I have had a search but couldn't find any details on what is required to do the modification.
If someone could point me to an already existing thread or list parts needed that would be great. I just bought an L serise to wreck and am hoping to be able to utalise the PS of that.
Thanks Carl

I've done this to my UK spec MV 1800 (Brumby) - you need the entire parts kit from an MY series vehicle (any of them) which has power steering fitted.
There's quite a list. one thing to watch is the extended thermo housing (clears the back of the power steering pump) - You MUST have this part for it to work !
As far as I can tell the later L series rack is a no go due to size differences.
If you can land on the entire parts kit from a donor car then great, and then its easy swap over.
Otherwise scraping parts in from here and there you need to know that you have everything.
ie Pump and bottom pulley bracket,PAS Steering rack complete, idler pulley, 3 groove crank pulley, extended thermo housing, pas style steering UJ (possible to adapt other though) various hoses for steering fluid. Fixings for above.
Hope this helps - shout if you want images of mine.

+1 on the images.
Im also wondering how and what is required to put power steering in.
I have also searched the forum and can't find anything so a link would be nice if it exists.
Cheers Cam

A dry run/fit of parts gathered is also a good idea.
I think someone has also done L Series to MY stuff. The thermostat housing is a little longer in the neck but you may be able to add a joiner to extend hose with a short off cut - it is all to clear the MY power steer pump. If L power steer pump used no need as it is snug central not hanging out there in the RHS engine bay.
Search 1111giles and you should find some info - not sure of what write up he did ?

MY actually stands for Model Year - but the EA81 series engined subarus from about 1979 to 1984 were dubbed "MY"s for what ever reason. MV is the UK name for them
The brumby is in the MY class and is nothing like the L series - although some parts are interchangeable with some mods, such as the 5 speed gearbox.
L series power steering into the brumby, I'm not sure that this has been done before - there's always a first for everything though. Mounting the pump might take some time to nut out and I'm not sure if the steering rack will be short enough for the MY setup.
One way to find out!
A powersteering unit from an MY touring wagon or coupe is a direct bolt in, provided you have the holes drilled and tapped on the driver's side head to fit the PS pump brackets. You also need to get the crank pulley to make it all work.
Cheers
Bennie

Think I am starting to "get it"
From your posts I have an idea.
I have a 84 brumby wreck which once the motor and Gbox are out I will attemt to "Dry fit" The PS rack from the MPFI Touring wagon wreck into the brumby wreck, but I don't pick these two wrecks up till this weekend.
The PS pump from the MPFI EA82 might fit where the tensioner pulley goes for the EA81 aircon belt.
I may even fit the MPFI EA82 and 5 speed into the brumby untill I can find a doner EJ20.
I had a MPFI EA82 L series wagon for seven years and know their flaws, head gaskets (oil) and lash adjusters (noise).

Have the L serie PS rack out and I am going to dry fit it to the Brumby wreck I have.
It should go close as the L series has longer tie rod ends.
The problem I see ATM is the mounting diameter of the rack on the driver side end.
Will have a better look tomorrow when the Brumbys rack is out.
