Wide bodied XT6, SVX development link

Post by steptoe » Fri Sep 09, 2011 2:11 pm

stumbled upon this hard to find article on subaruxt.com (just by altering the id= numbers!)

Fury Chris mentioned wide bodied XT4tex some time ago. Turns out I have never had the chance to pop a bonnet on SVX so surprised to see this pic of 3.3 litre under an XT6 bonnet, check out the damage to drivers door frame and insides look a little disturbed, wide body ?

Hmmm... good question ... developing for LHD market or Subaru America did the work.
There is more to this story on 2879, 2880 ...sorry , forgot to mention that you need to alter the last digit or two to continue reading

Yeah good spotting Nev. I was a little suprised that they used an XT as a shell as there would be serious modification needed to make the EG33 fit, that engine is huge. A Liberty/Legacy would have been a better test mule

But on the other hand, Subaru employed help from Western Washington University to help develop the EJ engine. There is a photo floating around of an EA81 with DOHC heads and fuel injection from this collage

I would love to have the time and gear to do things like that, but then again, wouldnt all of us!

I wonder did they use that boombox in the background to play the engine metallica to toughen it up? It looks tough!

There was also this first page, with what looks like an SVX shell in the background

starting to think some of us shoulda gone to uni!

Neville, nice seamless completion of that report too :)

I guess you don't try to develop a two door luxomobile out of a four door poverty pack.Cripes , who wouldn't want a 3.3 litre boxer like this packing under their Vortex bonnet?

Looking at some of the interior gadgets - is it a stereo and rally trip stuff just shoved in there? On a tight budget to create SVX in a used rally wide bodied XT6 for starters or under cover operations, or just using a side impacted XT6 for experimental work - and cannot always believe what you read, in conjunction with what you see !!

Then again the EA81 does not look like a finished product quality - all part of development? Thinking surely a uni would try cast alloy manifold , that mild steel manifold does look a little back yardy doesn't it? better than what I can do anyway :)

Pretty certain I have seen that twin cam EA81i pic before yet never sunk in it was twin cam, nor the distance the injectors are from the ports (a compromise between TBI and MPI?)

Now, having shot my mouth off, I remind self of an engineer I met who worked almost on his own on some vehicle manufacturers design either at home on the farm (in country that he chose an old Rangey to get in and out reliably :D) or in rented industrial premises set up like a office surrounding a gym - with the odd diff component to refer to.

Nothing wrong with thinking development does not all take place under a manufacturers roof line !

voice operated radio - back then !

I think I understand the limited benefit item - air bag suspension - good move saving grief for owners a few years later.

Almost makes me want one - as a drive train donor :D

I doubt he'd swap, but it would probably go cheap, its been sitting there for over 5 years.

No ECU, but I have a feeling it was from a VW combi with an aftermarket computer

I can inquire if you like

Erm, probably still in development itself so very unlikely they would have used their future mainstay as a further development car:rolleyes:

I really really like these sorts of threads.

One forgets just how much work goes into a new concept, esp 20+ years later when people like us are still trying to improve the original design!

Keep them coming!
