EJ induction/high revving sound question

Post by El_Freddo » Mon Aug 15, 2011 12:37 am

G'day all,

Got a question that I think is related to induction noise at speed. '96 lib, EJ22 manual stock as a rock. When cruising at 100km/h all's good, the engine is quiet, at 110km/h you hear the engine as if it's racing, further up the speed range it's the same. At 110km/h I find it annoying, yet Ruby Scoo's EJ22 is revving higher at 100km/h and I don't hear the same noise even at 110km/h were she'll be pulling about 3500rpm compared to somewhere near 3250rpm which is what Ruby S does at 100km/h.

Is this due to the setup of the air intake after the airbox or is there something else to it?
Can something be moved to tweaked to stop this noise occurring other than turing up the stereo?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Bennie

Normally Subaru have complicated induction intakes to reduce this noise, so my guess it's been changed or the air filter is not standard.. either way something is not as factory as first thought??

Hmm... I might have to check out the filter as I'm pretty sure this would be the only non factory part - the rest is all looking pretty stock from what I know:

My thought was that the air intake inside the guard might have had something to do with it, I might find my answer when I pop the top of the air box off...

You could try testing it by disconnecting each part of the system from the snorkel back untill you isolate the noise. Time for a snorkel?

I'd love a snorkel on Ruby Scoo - but this little puppy would look odd with a snorkel as it's pretty stock other than the WRX rims...

And I don't think my mate would like me pulling stuff off his car, doing a test run and repeat until I find it. I was hoping there might have been a quick fix of move this or remove that and it'd be sweet...

Think I better get onto that snorkel when I can :D I'm keen for something that looks good and is practical at the same time.
