Fuel hose ratings ....

Post by steptoe » Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:07 pm

I'm taking Disco's advice in replacing 24 year old fuel hose in my EA82T's fuel rail buried under a four legged spider while it is out.

I called in to an obscure place and found hose with working pressure rating of 50 psi , has stiff character with a 15mm OD which turns out too much for the genuine hose clamps that I prefer

Marked in white says " SOLUTIONS FRASER FUEL LINE TO SAE 30R6 - 8mm [5/16]"
Get along to another joint that sells " CODAN FUEL INJECTION HOSE SAE 30 R7 ID 7.5mm 100311" has an OD of about 13mm so fits in better with the clamps

link to Codan site on this hose explains a bit more and that the plastic verniers I borrowed in store did not maesure up as 14.5mm OD

http://www.aapsa.com.au/codan-fuel-injection-hose.html

Interestng that 5/16" is ~ 7.9mm, some call it 8mm hose and this stuff at R7 ratng is 7.5mm for a nice snug fit on the EA82s fuel lines

Start to google fuel hose ratings and find this handy tidbit

http://www.volksbolts.com/faq/fuelhose.htm

Looks like the bigger the R value the more recently developed the hose is for modern fuels and resistng decay due to what goes in the fuel tank.

These guys above sell R9 for aviation and suggest R6 and R7 is inferior- to R9

Also got some H511 AUTOMOTIVE FUEL HOSE SAE J 30 R6 WP 12 BAR ID 1/4"

They are nearly consistant with their ratings - I thought the thicker wall th better until found clamps not like it, the thinner wall has better rating :)

remember- you read it here , and don't blame me if you start to read fuel hose ratings from now on, gonna cause a stir in parts shops now checking the rating before you cut it :-)

I also made sure to replace the two under the back ie to/from the EFI fuel pump which is external and reasonably easy to get at .
And the fuel pump with a VL Turbo one which I think I put a post in about ages ago .

Ha. I've always just asked for fuel hose - I've never worried about diametre or specific rating - so long as it is EFI rated I'm happy...

Cheers

On searching the CODAN found R6 on ebay and actually took a bit more searching to find their R7.

Was interesting to read of E5 fuel as an ethanol minmum, rather thab our E10

another ha, a mate, a mechanic, fitted normal fuel hose to an efi fuel pump in an emergency to a customers Falcon and never bothered to swap in efi hose at later services for several years !!

My spare fuel pump is sitting dormant in my LPG sedan :) Good tip too A.
