Hi guys & girls.
I am contemplating an exhaust change for my H6 Outback and would like to hear some comments from enthusiasts. We are all aware of the unique sound the 4 Cylinder rex's obtain from a simple modification but what would be the result for a six? I would not be looking to replicate the WRX sound but moreso an understated note that identifies it as a 6 cylinder boxer and starts to bark modestly only when the right foot is firmly planted. Some might say bad idea but at this stage just thought I would ask. Thanks in advance for any feedback, comments & suggestions!
Exhausts for H6
What year outback? There's a couple of configurations of the 6 cylinder engine. Does your car have a single or daul mufflers? How much of the system are you thinking of replacing? Just mufflers, cat back or a whole system from headers back?
Exhaust note is very very subjective. Generally anything that sounds better will also be louder, and the balance between the two is upto the individual.
You won't get a boxer sound at all with the 6, and i'm not sure any 6 really sounds unique per se. I've had a 2.25" straight through muffler on my car and it was migraine inducing with the drone on the highway. At full throttle though it sounded like god was ripping open the sky, pretty cool. It had a liberty B4 muffler when i bought it that sounded more like a porsche, but it was over legal limit for dB so i ditched it. I've since gone to a 2.25" muffler that isn't straight through, it's bought down the dB and i now consider it pretty civilised at partial throttle around town/cruising. It's also a deeper sound than my other two mufflers and i think the best note so far at full throttle, but overall pretty quiet. Thats my opinion and unique to my H6 though.
Just a note that the 6's have a bit of a reputation for been notoriously difficult to keep quiet. So steer clear of any sort of traditionaly "sports exhaust" or straight through exhuast system if all you want is a little more bark.

The H6 produces a very different sound - sounds more like a well sorted 186.
I see you are in SA - see Dave at Gepps Cross Exhaust - he has a fair bit of experience with Subarus and H6s (and he done a few for his neighbor - Steve Burgess - Subaru Master of Rising Sun Imports)
