Vortex power rack, same as L power rack?

Post by steptoe » Sun Jun 12, 2011 7:18 pm

Another Vortex question based on someone saying the Vortex is wider than the L

The racks themselves , my guess is they are same thing and the rack ends same too? Tie rods different to L Series then?
I have a leaky rack from my 86 sedan sitting loose in the shed,
I have a leaky rack in my 87 Vort, thinking either attempt rack overhaul myself or send away - the dirty one that is already out and has no rack ends fitted, so I can do an exchange without disbling car for time of reco - not that I can drive it anywhere yet
any info shared as usual is appreciateda

Dimensions

Post by coupe » Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:42 pm

The two cars are virtualy identical
Vortex
Wheelbase 97 in (2,464 mm)
Length 177.6 in (4,511 mm)
Width 66.5 in (1,689 mm)
Height 52.6 in (1,336 mm)
rack turns from lock to lock 3.5

L series
Wheelbase 2,470 mm (97.2 in) (sedan)
Length 4,435 mm (174.6 in) (sedan)
Width 1,660 mm (65.4 in)
Height 1,335 mm (52.6 in) (2WD sedan)
rack turns from lock to lock 3.7
The racks are from memory the same dimensionaly. but the Vortex one is alumimum casing and the L series was steel. and the rack ratios are different.

Thanks Neville and Pete. I would not have thought of ratio difference. It may pay to get same done and returned rightfully or run some Lucas steering conditioner :) , then again the 3.5 be little faster :)

I have Dept measures as major dimensions and take them as body point extremes
length 4490mm, width 1690mm, high at kerb mass 1330 AWD (1300 others),wheelbase 2465, and laden ground clearance 155 AWD (110 others)
