Driveshaft bearings (gearbox)

Has anyone changed these? and can they be done without removing the box? Does the bearing retainer screw off the access the bearing?

Lots of play in the CV at GB end. It's an 83 brumby.

G'day scoobymine.

First off, and not meaning to come across short and sharp - but this should have been posted in the "engine, gearbox and diff" section of the forum. A moderator might move it for you...

Anyway as to your question - the play in the CVs is no indication to he health of the bearings in the gearbox where the diff is. If these bearings are on the way out you will experience noise that gets louder with speed, it would most likely be a whining noise. You might feel some clunky restriction when you turn the output shafts by hand when the CV shafts are removed.

What you'll be experiencing is the slop that has developed between the output shaft and the drive shaft's CV cup. I would say that most of the slop will be in the CV cup rather than the output shaft.

There's really nothing to worry about with this unless it's causing vibration at speed

Sorry about that mate, but thanks anyway. Excuse my ignorance. I've been trying to track down a "rotational " knock (at low speed) on the right front for two years. Changed everything, including 2 new RH CV's, no luck. getting P'd off, maybe time to offload the old girl. It's so annoying for a pedantic bloke like me.

Try replacing the strut. These can cause knocks in the front as well. When were the bearings last replaced?

Bearings, cv's, balljoints and tie rod ends all replaced in the last 12 months. haven't done the struts.

Sorry, did the struts, but they were guaranteed secondhand from sunspares in QLD.

Have you checked the health of the uni joints in the prop shaft to the rear? As strange as it sounds noises in the drive train can travel and sound like they come from different areas than they're actually from...
