why not like a modern tow bar set up with the removable sleeve , would just have to get a mount on the front made up .d_generate wrote:Mate and I were talking tonight of how to make a quick mount at each end, thinking about maybe adding a tow bar to the front and somehow making a bracket so the winch mount just slipped over the ball...........bit of homework to do me thinks.

Yeah thought about it - in the sand you'd need something deeper or a starpicket and some rope would do the trick. The soil stuff I've not used them but some sort of metal stake should do the job well.Venom wrote:You could try some tent pegs to anchor those Bennie? Shouldn't take much if its into soil.
And d_generate is looking at bread creates - these would be great I reckon as there wouldn't be any bend in them that the cable tie joints provide with the milk create setup...
Dad has an old winch that he mounted on a plate that had a tow ball hitch bolted to it as well. This was primarily used for loading cars onto his tandem trailer but was useful when he had his jeep going and was stuck out 4wd'n.d_generate wrote:Mate and I were talking tonight of how to make a quick mount at each end, thinking about maybe adding a tow bar to the front and somehow making a bracket so the winch mount just slipped over the ball...........bit of homework to do me thinks.
Something like the removable square tow hitch setup seen on many hayman reece heavy duty tow bars - and the same sort of thing I think Suparu has done with his outback in the US.Vallyboy wrote:why not like a modern tow bar set up with the removable sleeve , would just have to get a mount on the front made up .

Yeah we discussed that but I already have a standard style tow bar on the back and with the reo in the wheel carrier fitting the Reece type like the Forrester has probably won't work as they are quite broad, the under-tray is well mounted with 5 X 14mm bolts so maybe cutting a slot in it and pushing a standard tongue through so it sits above the 5mm thick plate then bolting it from underneath might work.
I noticed the rear tow bar tongue was a bit bent to one side after being snatched out backward 3 times in a row (yeah attaching to the tow ball is a no no) and again getting winched out last week so I got under the back for a look today and the whole tow bar is now totally fooked, it's actually bent/bowed back in the guts about 50 mm, so that'll be coming off & straightened & strengthened/or rammed back into a wall/or ditched & the new one strengthened.

I've actually got no idea why it's a no no, maybe something to do with the brass tow ball snapping??? but I've done it hundreds of times in my old Landcruiser and never had a problem..........Yeah I'm almost tempted to take the tow bar back to Parkside, the 50mm tube they have used must be pretty piss weak.
The other option is to use my mates Gen 2 Liberty one that's just been removed as it attaches under the wheel well also for a bit of central strength and if I decide to re-attach the rear sway bar it won't be a problem as it's got my old Liberty one on it now (different shape because of central mount which Impreza doesn't have).
