The ugly RX had 4WDiscs !

Post by steptoe » Sun May 08, 2011 3:37 am

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Leone

I'm sure many have seen this linked wiki on the Leone (Italian for lion), nothin' to do with Sierra. I for one do not recall it as would have remembered the detail of the ugly RX rear discs. Someone found a clip featuring a chase between an ugly and ugly RX on a dirt road up a mountain in Japan and posted its link on AUSubaru somewhere.Opened my eyes as to the lineage of the RX. Was sure the MY had one in rally form in NZ. Wonder if any plans to do an anniversary RX !

Ugly RX?? I didn't think the Ugly came in an RX model? I thought they were GSRs

The GSR was sold overseas but in Japan there was also the RX Leone coupe from 1972. As steptoe has noted these were equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes (and a five speed transmission) unlike the GSR.

Here is a link showing a Japanese brochure for the first RX:

1978 4WD Station Wagon
1974 DL Sedan
1974 GSR Coupe

Wow!

It had "the true" dual exhaust port heads

I also notice that its rear trailing arms look quite different to the semi trailing arms of the MY and L series.

I also like the roll cage, but i cant believe it was only fwd

Each time I see it I see extra bits....like RX LEONE on one side, LEONE RX on the other side.

Really not sure what the ad gurus were trying to get across - ""There is no need to buy an RX LEONE because the sedan has selectable 4WD" ? Non RX had 4WD mudflaps

" Buy a standard UGLY with 4WD option and you'll keep up with the RX LEONE"

"See what happen to plick that ding your car and pee off" !!

But look at those horrible pre historic plate style brake calipers . I think I'd rather have std drums .
