BullBar mounted Winch.. Usefull.. or wankfactor?

i have one of them "supercheap auto" electric winch lying around.

is it worth mounting it to the brumby? the winch is 850kg rating

if its only going to get laughed at i wont bother. i just thought it would be something different

Neatly mounted and looked after I reckon it could be a good tool to use when needed. Trick is to look after it - even a winch that is un-used needs maintenance, especially if it is submerged or subject to lots of mud.

Even though it is a supercrap item, you might find it very handy and end up having this unit as the catalyst to getting something better for the job/long haul (pun intended!)

Not too sure an 850 kg winch would have worked on mine Dave but I guess anything is better than nothing, looking at getting something small for mine too but I'd like to have it so I could maybe hang it off chains at either end instead of hard mounting it so A. it didn't get covered in shit & B.it can pull from either end, maybe something like this which is about what mine weighs loaded & only comes in at 7kg so I could chuck it in the spare wheel well. I guess it would just be a matter of working out the power supply & mounts.

Oh yeah, my proper snatch strap arrived today Dave....$42 delivered, 7,000kg X 9m, I seriously thought that yellow thing was one though the new one does match colour lol

De-generate, the way you get paid out for your sand boggings I reckon you should just get one permanently mounted to the front and the rear

Funny thing is....it doesn't really get bogged like most cars where one back & one front dig themselves a hole, it just sort of keeps going till it's sitting on the bash plate very evenly & it's impossible to go any further (pic below) even Davo wouldn't risk going back the way I got there as mine was sliding at about a 40deg angle for about 300m before I decided where I was was the safest place to stop/attempt to turn..............I guess at $99 delivered for that one on fleaBay & only an extra 7kg each-even less with nylon rope I could do it, there is a huge reo behind that wheel carrier but first up I'm gonna get some bread crates & make some decent free tracks & remember that the shovel lives in the car....not the camping box lol.

Yeah problem is it's usually me who's gone too far so there's nothing in front to attach a winch to apart from soggy sand or water, if you had one of those little ones mounted on a plate with a couple of short chains that could be mounted to something solid under the front or rear & a good solid power lead going to the back also it may just come in handy, I think anything much bigger & you are going to feel the weight & possibly block off your air supply, mine's not that great as it is.

Here's a couple of ideas I've come up with....well first drawing is mine, it's a 1.5mm thick blade about 350mm wide & 100mm high with a 600mm handle for A. dragging sand out from under your car & getting under the tyres and B. smoothing off area under your tent etc.

But second I "think" someone told me about years ago but I can't remember who or where? 3 or 4 posts starting at about 2m going down to about 1.2m & hammered into the sand with rope or chain holding the top of one to sand level the other ........attach winch & extension rope to bottom of first one & hope it's strong enough not to pull the bottom of the post out, maybe a star picket for the first one and spaced further apart than the drawing obviously.

Second option works a treat. Haven't tried it in sand, but in hard ground I can (hand) winch any of my cars off two 900mm star pickets.

Have also seen a gadget with three or four short lengths of vertical or angled steel tube to sink the star pickets through, joined by some flat bar with an eye on the front end to attach your winch cable. Saves having to securely join all the posts with rope or chain.

Has anyone used those rollout sand tracks with any success at all? I like the idea that they roll up and would be nice an handy just not sure if they would be any good?

Backyard Brumby: I've used milk creates cut down to individual panels then joined by cable ties. They worked well but need to be anchored at the end not in use before you go for it. Also having one at each wheel is a must to get the best out of them...

As for the roll out sand tracks you talk of, I've not seen them or used them.

You could try some tent pegs to anchor those Bennie? Shouldn't take much if its into soil.

I just picked up one of these, I paid $125.50 with free postage in the make an offer section, the special runs out at about 5pm WST, this is a later auction for those that don't see it in time. I Think it's worth the extra $30 to get the extra 500kg over the 3000lb one, I'll run a thick power cable to the rear and make it so I can use it at each end, wouldn't mind some of that nylon rope to make it a bit easier to handle too.

Yeah Paul, hard to say which would be better, one of those or a couple of star pickets & a hammer, gotta think about space & weight, I'm sure those anchors are not cheap either........which I am lol.

I can also get 50' of 5,000lb nylon rope from the US for about $65 which will drop a couple of kg off the winch weight & give me an extra 20' to play with, should be interesting anyhoo.

........shit!!! I'd be happy with an extra 2" to play with.

i was thinking of building a winch bar for my l series useing 1 of the budget ebay winches just to help getting out of slippery spots :P i think it would be a great thing to have !

Mate and I were talking tonight of how to make a quick mount at each end, thinking about maybe adding a tow bar to the front and somehow making a bracket so the winch mount just slipped over the ball...........bit of homework to do me thinks.
