Things I learnt and forgot to do

Post by Cliff R » Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:07 am

Firstly, could I suggest everyone checks their heater valve (the one that directs hot engine coolant to the heater core in the car) well BEFORE they are required to need it, ie, before winter.
I went to use mine and it was seized. trying to force it was only going to break something so after applying much RP7/WD40 etc with the connecting cable removed from the valve I got it going again. Would have been much easier if occasionally I had taking the plastic cover off the valve throughout the year and put some lube on it then (its in the engine bay on the MY under the spare wheel on the passengers side of the car)

Secondly, convinced my 4 speed MY D/R manual gearbox was stuffed due to it only going into 4th on the first go about 5% of the time I was going to start looking for a replacement. While the G/B is probably going to need replacing within the next 5 years or so I noted 99.9% of the problem was the nylon/teflon bush located on the bottom of the gearstick has totally worn away and so introducing a lot of slop in the gear stick. As a temporary solution I used a piece of fuel hose to replace the bush till I make a new one and now (due to excessive flexibility of the rubber temp bush) I get 4th 99% of the time on the first go. Allowing for the G/B general wear when a new bush goes in it should be OK for a while again.
Simple solutions and a bit of time can go a long way.

if you see FROGs posts he has a sig that usually sells these bushes for MY slop , very affordable - less than $30 posed I think
