Front diff preload / pinion backlash adjustment?

Hey guys

New front diff is in and gearbox reassembled (hopefully for the last time!) and just wanted to ask...

How do I know if the backlash between the pinion gear and the crown wheel is adjusted properly? Is it a matter of moving the bearing retainers in/out until there is no play left?
