In case anyone was wondering, the inlet manifold from a Gen 1 Lib EJ22 won't bolt up to a 1999 Forester EJ20.
Ports are bigger on the Foz, and the bolts are in different spots. Gaskets are suitably different. Injectors are very different (side entry on the early ones, top entry later). Bugger.
Manifolds and injectors on the earlier EJs of different capacities (all with small rocker covers) are interchangeable with very minor fiddles.
Sumps are interchangeable.
Header pipes are interchangeable.
Now I have a shipload more work to do than initially planned.
Dane.

Yep. And i think it was around 1997 that they changed the heads.
Along with different intake ports, the combustion chamber/valve placement also changed and the heads became whats known as an "interference design"

the change was about mid '98. I have an early '98 Foz and a late '98. Heads are different, 4 bolt/8 bolt bellhousings etc. The only external difference I can see to tell the cars apart is the radio antenna.
I did change the manifolds and sensors between the early '98 and a '93 Lib with no problems. The Foz only has a crank sensor, whereas the Lib has a crank and a cam sensor. They all bolted into place no dramas though. The Lib has HLAs, and the Foz has roller cam followers.

Most of engine parts before late 1997 will mount/fit on earlier model of EJs, after late 1997/98 is very hazy some does fit but most doesn't. Same goes for gearboxes as well.
