Advice on clutch kits for the Brumby

Hi guys,

Soon to remove and replace the engine and gearbox and finally get the brumby project underway (pictures soon)

Just wondering whether I can get some advice on clutch kits for the 1989 brumby.

Have had a look at work and it would set me back around $270 for a kit. Looked on ebay and found a few

This one is what I am most interested in, the car will be for light offroading and general driving so no need for the performance however due to me being able to get it from america minus the cost of postage it would work out similar price. I was wondering whether this would give me better longevity out of the clutch..

Any thoughts?

YES !

Know what clutch you have to replace !

Listings are crap except genuine.

We have either 200 or 225mm diameters and the spline count to keep an eye on

and there can also be throw out bearing differences, keep an eye on divots worn by fork on cast iron

search clutch with my name on them should find a lot of info

What are your futures plans regarding engine/gearbox combo? are you keeping them all original? if so, then I'd look at buying one locally (in Aust), that way if it's wrong you can take it back (or post back) without any hassles I'd only buy from an overseas Ebayer if you're 100% sure of what you need. I'd also buy a standard one unless you're upgrading your wheel size or HP. Clutch Industries do a great HD clutch kit for the EA81s (99% sure yours will be a 225mm) and I'd recomend a flywheel machining before assembling. A nice new 6201 spigot bearing also goes a long way too :mrgreen:

+1 for ebay clutches = pain

You need a guy you take it back to if for whatever reason does not fit...the savings just aren't worth it.

Check your pedal box/cable while you are there too looking at all thing clutch

will be putting another ea81 that has been rebuilt. Thinking should be able to squeeze some extra horespower out of it. And a second hand 4 speed is going back in.

I have seen the Ci ones and that was the way I was thinking I must admit I was just tempted by the stage 1 kit.

Also by check the pedal box do you mean whether it has had sideways force distorting it? when I first got the car it got to a stage where I couldnt even disengage the clutch. turned out to be the pedal box warped and I have since had it welded and reinforced. however does anyone know whether there are any pedal boxes that are interchangeable?

Appreciate the advice and I guess this is something that is not worth getting on ebay.

Spot on

Don't think there are any other boxes that are interchangeable - that is why they are all welded up as you have described.

Great advice there Steven :)

I know the leone sedans, sports wagons and touring wagons from 1980 to 1984 all have the same pedal boxes but fnding good ones is very hard. I'd weld/stiffen up your own one. I'd recomend this even if you don't use a HD clutch.

Yeah actually I have not been able to find a solution for the rear bumper so still looking


And thanks guys you once again stopped me from making a mistake. I had a look and all the american kits for the brat were the wrong diameter. I am very glad I asked

even locally the sales guys only have the catalogues and listings to go by, will swear they have the one for you. A good sales guy, usually old, cranky, type two diabetic and working for the benefits of being over 65 and not yet 70, will bark at you "diameter, and spline count, and what throw out carrier diameter" so you really do need it out or another flywheel you know you are gonna use. I think I had it worked out black fork is 225mm clutch from factory, anything can change since then. Blue is 200mm. New bearing carriers are about 60 bucks from Subaru people like FROG

Cheers again steptoe....doing so much on this brumby (struggling to find anything that isn't going to be replaced) I was hoping to get all the parts lined up to quicken the process but I think I would be smarter to listen to better advice and get the new gearbox and remove the old one before I go ordering

James,

The flywheel I have is meant for a 200mm clutch. The plate I have is 21 spline.

Gary, please do not confuse people, please... EA81 came from factory with 200mm clutch in earlier models of 4WD and later ones came out with 225mm much like the L Series diameter but presure plate diaphragms had a different size hole in middle of pointy ends of the finger springs so an L pressure plate won't do the job - OK it will but shifting is like a stuffed clutch - I've tried it accidentally.

21 spline count is correct for the 4 speed box. The fly has different step between L and MY too

Oh great thanks a lot Gary. So would the gearbox I am getting have any affect on the kit i order. Or should I go ahead and order a kit for the 200mm?

Also Gary I am making progress on getting the engine out I just need to organize an engine crane to get it free then I can give you a call

the 4 peed gearbox 4WD behind EA81 have 21 splines on both 200 or 225mm clutches

If James is supplying the flywheel for your project that is a start, then there is the throwout bearing listings to throw in, but these are aftermarket listings causing confusion. Genuine I think claims there is only one for all EA81 4 speeds.

and now is the time to tell you the 225mm clutch kit is twice the price of the 200mm :(

I am happy now at least with a lot more information I can find the cheapest CORRECT kit.

Now i just need to find a throw out bearing
