Turbo engine wont start

Post by coupe » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:04 pm

Hi Gang
I have a spider manifolded turbo in a 87 vortex.
Im trying to get it started. i have spark, gas, motor turns. Everything that is supposed to be connected is. the error code is 13. which is the crank angle sensor i have tried another CAS .
The timing was set to default.
I have tried changing timing settings and all the usual things i can think of.
Im not a turbo 82 guy so im struggling to figure out the cause.
Any ideas would be great
Thanks Pete

Hey Pete,

If you have spark it wont be your CAS.. I'd say your dizzy is 180deg out.

Cheers,
Paul

is this on something you just drove and parked and now won't start? or as Paul suggests - you been friggin around with things?

CAS is in the dizzy - YES? and you got no start, so swapped in another and still no start? Does that mean you had no spark before you added another CAS? And now have spark but no fire?

Turbo

Post by coupe » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:33 am

The motor is a replacement for the cooked turbo motor. The replacement was in good condition. I have tried both cads . I have spark and fuel regardless of which one I use. Tested coil and at spark plug end. Replaced fuel pump just in case. Next I'm going to try aero start. I have tried mulitable changes to the dizzy position.
Werid hey .

Back to basics then.

Aerostart is good diagnostic tool - and if flames apear at the can with a whoppin' backfire may lead elsewhere like dicky timing.

1 3 2 4

Someone tell you donor ran well or you know it ran well and no one touched it?

Comp test?

Pull TB covers just to check all is good as if you were fitting new belts and use the three marks for belt install and their corresponding marks on backing covers.

I have some pics in here somewhere to assist dizzy install and setting procedure with three plug ECU dizzy. No 1 sits closest to firewall, dizzy spins anti clock? With timing on #1 comp stroke, fly at 20 DBTDC the dizzy has just 25 thou gap between the bits from being lined right up.....

Where do you have fuel? Is it coming from the injectors or are you just checking the feed to the engine?

If it has all of the important things such as fuel and spark it should be making some sort of noise when you're trying to start it. This could be a little popping with a jolt through the engine to full blown back firing.

How long has this engine been sitting for? The injectors may need to be cleaned out. An EFI specialist joint should be able to clean them out for you, dunno the cost, maybe around the $100 mark and above at a guess.

All the best

Cheers

Bennie

PS I"m also with Jonno on the dizzy being out 180 degrees...

or soak them yourself in a container of fuel additive , mobil used to do positive power for a few bucks a shot - overnight soak worked a treat!

Aerostart will help sort things one way or another

Turbo not starting

Post by coupe » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:16 pm

When i got the motor it was stripped to check belts etc..
(And a huge thanks to TOONGA who selflessly found and transported to turbo motor to me.)Well this arvo we tried again. I have fuel to the injectors. but i believe all 4 are not firing. We took out the backfire canister and poured petrol into the inlet piping. It ran for 5 seconds. So tomorrow i will use aero start so i can set the timing. and then run a multi meter over the harness to check for volts to the injectors. then i will strip them and soak.
cheers Pete

Due to the EA engines having top feed injectors, all the shit that drys up when the engines have sat, ends up in the injector. I would try tapping them slightly whilst turning over the engine and spraying some 'start you bastard' if you have a spare person. If this doesn't work then it's injectors out and have them serviced or replace with good known ones. I'd say your wiring is fine and a noid light would let you know this for sure.

They also squirt at same time per bank - batch fire as I found with my 3 plugger - swapped 1 and 3 , 2 and 4 injectors

Turbo lives

Post by coupe » Thu Mar 31, 2011 8:50 pm

Thanks to everyone.
We got a can of "start ya bastard" and 3 mins later we had the turbo running. Now i can tune the motor and finish the car off.
Once she was running the injectors cleared.
Im grateful for the advice from everyone, i promised to have the car running for my youngest sons birthday. so we just made it.
Cheers Pete

Thanks again Julian.
When we stripped the motor down, it was in really good condition. There were clean galleries and new gaskets so we were confident it was going to work out.
Cheers Pete
